PHILADELPHIA -- There was a time earlier this season, when Sid Fernandez was still pitching for the Orioles and looking for his first win in nearly a year, that he briefly toyed with the idea of saying to hell with it, retiring, going back to his native Hawaii for good."

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Apparently, Sid Fernandez is very serious about this weight-loss stuff.Orioles strength and conditioning coach Tim Bishop informed team management yesterday that he spoke with the left-hander on Tuesday, and that Fernandez said his weight was down to 226 pounds. That would be a reduction of at least 36 pounds; Fernandez weighed 262 pounds the last time he stepped on the scales for the team last fall."That is great news," said Orioles manager Phil Regan. "I think that once other players see what he's done, that will give everyone on the team a boost."

PHILADELPHIA -- So, Jim Fregosi, tell us the difference in Sid Fernandez."Me," the Philadelphia manager deadpanned. Not increased arm strength? Not the return to the National League? Not the advice of Phillies pitching coach Johnny Podres?"Me," Fregosi deadpanned again.Allow him to explain."I'm sitting in Montreal and we've just acquired Sid Fernandez," Fregosi said. "I'm at an OTB [Off-Track Betting] in Montreal. There's a horse running, 'Sid Sez.' And I bet that horse."I hit the trifecta for 200-something.

UPS AND DOWNSRun production -- *DOWN* -- picture concern last week was the bullpen. Now it's whether the slow O's lineup can hit enough singles and doubles to sustain rallies.Sid Fernandez -- *DOWN* --Four of the five starters in the rotation will get regular work, and right now, he's No. 5.Alan Mills -- *UP* -- His three no-hit innings against Boston Tuesday night a big relief to the Orioles.Andy Van Slyke -- *DOWN* --Doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out his strained left forearm is bothering his swing.

A decade ago tomorrow, Sid Fernandez won his first major-league game in Houston. In Lynchburg, Va., Phil Leftwich had completed his first year in high school.Ten years later, Sid Fernandez is second -- behind Nolan Ryan -- on the all-time leaders list for hits given up per nine innings and Leftwich is completing his first full year in the major leagues. The two pitchers will square off tonight as the Orioles go for their second straight win over the California Angels.Last year, Leftwich had a 3.79 ERA in 12 appearances.

PHILADELPHIA -- If the Philadelphia Phillies intend for Sid Fernandez to add some bulk to their thin pitching staff, it appears they'll have to battle the Cincinnati Reds for him.The agent for Fernandez, released Sunday by the Orioles, said yesterday that while several clubs had inquired about his client, the Reds and Phillies clearly were the front-runners."

The Orioles pitching staff is on the mend, and pitching coach Mike Flanagan is a happy man. The Orioles endured a tumultuous month in which Brad Pennington was traded, starters Ben McDonald, Kevin Brown and Sid Fernandez were on the disabled list, Gene Harris was traded for, then put on the disabled list, reliever Alan Mills was sent to Rochester and Armando Benitez and Arthur Rhodes were sent to the minors, then recalled to Baltimore. Farmhands Terry Clark, Mark Lee, Jimmy Myers, Scott Klingenbeck, John DeSilva and John Dettmer also saw action in June.

BOWIE -- Sid Fernandez says he is ready to get back to the majors.Fernandez, who is on rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Bowie, figured that his five-inning start last Sunday was good enough to be his first and only start with the Baysox. But the Orioles had other plans, and manager Phil Regan wanted him to make another start, this time seven innings or 120 pitches. So Fernandez did just that. He went all seven innings of the first game of a doubleheader against the Reading Phillies last night, pitching a two-hit, 6-0 shutout at Prince George's Stadium.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Something awful happened to the Orioles after all those glowing preseason reviews, all the anticipation of the indomitable rotation and the powerful lineup. Something really terrible. They were forced to play games."It's going to be a long year," said Orioles ace Mike Mussina, who blew an early 4-0 lead on the way to a 6-5 loss to the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium last night, and then questioned the heart of the team. The Orioles also suffered the indignity of having their former closer, Lee Smith, finish them off in the ninth inning.
