SALISBURY -- The Savannah Sand Gnats won the South Atlantic League title last night, sweeping a doubleheader from the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.The Sand Gnats clinched the best-of-five championship series, three games to one, by winning the nightcap, 4-1.The Sand Gnats, a Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, had taken a 2-1 series lead with a 3-1 victory in 13 innings in the first game last night.Savannah's Eric Stuckenschneider won the opener with a decisive two-run triple off reliever Jason Cole.

The best-of-five South Atlantic League championship series between the Delmarva Shorebirds and Savannah Sand Gnats will begin tonight in Georgia after the league office was forced to rework its schedule because of bad weather.The SAL season was supposed to be completed by Sept. 15, but the involved parent clubs agreed to let the championship series continue past it. Delmarva is a Montreal Expos affiliate, Savannah a Los Angeles Dodgers club.The second game of the series is scheduled for tomorrow in Savannah.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Three Delmarva pitchers combined on a four-hitter for the second consecutive night, as the Shorebirds defeated the Charleston River Dogs, 6-0, last night in a Single-A South Atlantic League game.Shorebirds starter Javier Vazquez, 19, pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out nine and allowing one hit, an infield single.Four of the Shorebirds' runs were unearned, as Charleston committed eight errors. SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Pinch hitter Gregg Morrison singled in the bottom of the 10th inning last night to give the Savannah Sand Gnats a 3-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds in the first game of the South Atlantic League championship series.The best-of-five series continues at 7 p.m. tonight in Savannah.Delmarva had tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, but Rafael Ozuna reached on a two-base error in the 10th to start the winning rally.Delmarva had led, 1-0, but the Sand Gnats scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 2-1 lead.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Second baseman Carlos Casimiro last night became the first player in the Delmarva Shorebirds' two-year history to hit two home runs in a game, leading the Single-A team to a 5-0 win over the Greensboro Bats in South Atlantic League play.Casimiro's homers came in the second and sixth innings, both with one on, for Delmarva (4-4). Starter Americo Peguero earned the win, allowing three hits over six innings. Ryan Kohlmeier pitched the final three innings for his second save.

Charles Alley hit a two-run double with two out in the ninth inning last night to lift the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds over the Capital City Bombers, 7-5, in Single-A South Atlantic League action in Columbia, S.C.Alley finished 2-for-4 with a single, double and three RBIs. Tim DeCinces went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and three RBIs for Delmarva (48-35).Phillies 3-2, Baysox 2-1: Winners Tony Fiore (6-3) and Robert Dodd (3-3) led Reading (40-40) to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Bowie (41-41)

The Delmarva Shorebirds fought an uphill battle in their home opener last night but couldn't get over the peak.Trailing 6-0 midway through the game, Delmarva had the potential winning run at the plate twice in the late innings before dropping a 6-4 decision to the Capital City Bombers in a South Atlantic League game before 3,970 at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury."
