Three families were evacuated from their homes in the Elkridge area yesterday after Howard County fire officials discovered explosive levels of methane in the houses.The gas readings were so high that a pilot light for a water heater or stove could have caused an explosion in the houses, which are in an affluent neighborhood in the 7000 block of Calvert Drive, said Capt. Chris Shimer of Howard County Fire and Rescue Services.The methane was detected after a resident smelled gas and called BGE.BGE found readings of potentially explosive levels of methane and called 911 about 3: 15 p.m.About 30 houses in the neighborhood were tested for methane (( and all but three were found safe, Shimer said.

A small fire in an apartment building in Columbia's Owen Brown village forced 16 residents from their homes yesterday evening but caused no serious injuries, a spokesman for Howard County Fire and Rescue said.Nine apartments were damaged, some extensively, a fire board dispatcher said.About 7: 20 p.m., flames were reported from the second and third floors of the Chimneys of Cradlerock Apartments in the 6500 block of Quiet Hours Court, said Capt. Chris Shimer. Three occupants of one apartment were taken to Howard County General Hospital.

Howard County firefighters extinguished a 5-acre brush fire yesterday in the Hollofield section of Patapsco Valley State Park, off U.S. 40 in the Pickall area.Capt. Chris Shimer, a Department of Fire and Rescue Services spokesman, said the blaze was reported shortly after 5 p.m. and was all but extinguished by 7 p.m. He said that rough terrain made reaching the fire difficult.Shimer said no injuries or damage to any structures were reported, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

PARK CITY, Utah - The drought is over, times two. With a light snow falling and 15,000 spectators cheering, U.S. bobsled teams finished second and third yesterday in the four-man event, ending a 46-year stretch without a medal. USA 1 driver Todd Hays put down four consistent runs over two days to take the silver medal, and five-time Olympian Brian Shimer drove USA 2 in a torrid final dash to the finish line to win the bronze medal. Hays had a four-run time of 3 minutes, 7.81 seconds; Shimer finished in 3:07.

A Columbia family has been forced from its home by a fire started by lightning Sunday. Howard County firefighters responded to the call from the 8100 block of Sealight Lane in Long Reach village about 6:20 p.m., where the roof and attic of the two-story house belonging to the Sachs family was on fire. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly a half-hour before bringing it under control.
