On July 2, 2007, MARLING HARDING SHIFFLETT; beloved husband of the late Mary E. Shifflett; devoted father of Phyllis J. DiAngelo and Donna M. Pollard; loving grandfather of Elizabeth Malloy, David DiAngelo, Amy Bocklage, Debra Goodman and the late James Huddleston. Also survived by ten great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Funeral service will be held at the family owned Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk, Inc., 7922 Wise Ave., on Thursday 11AM. Interment Gardens of Faith Cemetery.

TO PREPARE for last Saturday's recreation-league championship basketball game, I did what big-time coaches do -- the guys and gals you see on television during this month's college basketball tournaments. I carried a clipboard. I made diagrams showing my players what to do if the other team tried a box-and-one, or a triangle- and-two defense. And I secured a supply of bottled water to keep my team hydrated.We had plenty of supplies, but were short of players. A few minutes before game time, our team had three players in the gym: my son, the son of my fellow coach, Jerry Shifflett, and our star shooter.

A PENNY may be a paltry amount, but a penny collection can be magic -- particularly when hundreds of children pitch in.Joann Olchowski, resource teacher in the Gifted and Talented Program at Swansfield Elementary School, says this is one of the lessons the Swansfield pupils learned through their Magic Pennies fund-raiser this year.From May 24 to June 4, they collected pennies for Howard County General Hospital. The hospital is one of the school's business partners.The money will be used to purchase a Wood's Light -- a lamp used to detect corneal abrasions -- in the hospital's Pediatric Emergency Department.

Player of the YearAmanda Shifflett, Northeast, senior, infielder: The No. 1-ranked Eagles (24-2) were chasing after their ninth state title, against North Carroll, when Shifflett came to the plate with a runner on and two out in the first inning. She ripped a triple to right-center and eventually came across to help give the Eagles a 2-0 lead that would turn into a 9-0 win. That was the story all season long for Shifflett, who added patience at the plate and the ability to go to all fields.

Amanda Shifflett provided two runs with one big swing in the top of the first and pitcher Deana Benner did the rest for top-ranked Northeast, which captured the Anne Arundel county championship with a 2-1 win over No. 3 Severna Park last night at Randazzo Park.The Eagles improved to 19-2 on the season as they prepare for the Class 3A East region playoffs, set to start on Friday at City.Last night, Shifflett's two-run homer down the third-base line was all Benner would need as she allowed just five hits with five strikeouts to improve her record to 6-1.Offense has been coming from Shifflett all season long.

Anita L. Schley, 89, former social workerAnita L. Schley, a former social worker and Baltimorean, died Tuesday in her sleep at the United Methodist Health Care Center in East Providence, R.I. She was 89.Mrs. Schley moved to Baltimore in 1960 and was a social worker for the city Department of Public Welfare until the mid-1960s. She moved to East Providence in 1972.During the 1930s, she was a social worker in rural Alabama and later was employed by the Children's Aid Society in Danbury, Conn.

Four people were injured yesterday when a car veered off a road near Clarksville and hit a pickup truck on the road's shoulder, Howard County police said.The accident occurred about 8 a.m. on Route 32 west of Linden Church Road when a 1991 Chevrolet driven by William Moore Jr. of the 3000 block of Ponder Road in Edgewater struck a 1995 Ford truck, a police report said.Moore was taken by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

Two men who allegedly stole four microwave ovens from a Wal-Mart were captured after a seven-mile, high-speed chase yesterday afternoon.The men evaded an employee of the discount store in Westminster by driving around him on the rear parking lot before heading north on Route 27 on the wrong side, authorities said.The suspects' vehicle sideswiped a car headed south on Route 27 near Random House, but the driver of that car was not injured, said Westminster City Police Officer Charles Shifflett.

An Anne Arundel Circuit judge convicted a 30-year-old Lansdowne man of first-degree murder yesterday, ruling that his shooting of his former fiancee at her house in Glen Burnie last May was premeditated.Gregory Edward Byrd of the 1700 block of Wilson Ave. was convicted by Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr. in the May 17, 1993, death of Loretta Lynn Shifflett, 23.Byrd's lawyers admitted in the four-day trial that he fired the three shots that killed Ms. Shifflett of the 7800 block of Twin Ridge Drive.

The event came and went in the daily cycle of news of Sept. 4 - man with rifle holds three people hostage in a house off Belair Road, near the Baltimore City-Baltimore County line, leading to a 14-hour standoff with police. This time, the Obviously Troubled Individual (OTI) is 38-year-old Roger Shifflett. He breaks into the house about 4 a.m., allegedly gunning for his estranged girlfriend. The girlfriend flees, leaving three other adults behind. After a few hours, Shifflett releases one of his hostages; the remaining two walk out of the house two hours later.

Man sought in altercation with police on I-695 Police were searching yesterday evening for a man who pulled a knife on a Maryland Transportation Authority Police officer during a traffic stop, prompting another officer to fire at the man, authorities said. The incident began at 12:30 a.m. yesterday when an officer pulled over a 2003 Cadillac along Interstate 695 in Anne Arundel County. After doing a background check, the officer discovered that the driver, Sean Michael Mapp, 26, of Goldsboro, was wanted for probation violation related to an armed-robbery charge, said spokesman Cpl. Jonathan Green.

Two people slain, three injured in city violence Two people were killed early yesterday in separate incidents, including a quadruple shooting in which one victim died and three were wounded, Baltimore police said. The shooting occurred about 3 a.m. in the 200 block of Harmison St. in South Baltimore. One man was shot in the hand and two women were shot in the leg, police said. A second man was found in an alley and pronounced dead at the scene, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.
