Suzanne Ruth Sherwood, the first woman appointed to the Maryland Tax Court, died Thursday at Roland Park Place. She was 85. "In her understated way, my aunt was an early feminist before that word came into existence," said Mrs. Sherwood's niece, Laure Ruth. "She enjoyed being a lawyer, but neither she nor her husband chose the traditional route of joining a law firm, becoming partner and making a lot of money," Ms. Ruth said. "Much of what she did was pro bono. She dedicated her life to public service and charitable works and helping others.

On Tuesday night, Arundel made its first visit to a volleyball state tournament since 1956. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the visit was a brief one. The seventh-ranked Wildcats (17-4) ran into an undefeated Sherwood team from Montgomery County and lost in three sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-22, in the Class 4A state semifinals at the University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum. The Warriors (18-0), who have yet to drop a set this season, used the power of hitters Alex Holston (14 kills, three aces)

— Broadneck's Reese Kiple spent last year coaching softball players who were intent on winning a title for their late former coach. This year, he told them they could win it for themselves. When Jim Ware died in the summer of 2008, Kiple stepped into the role and became a steadying force for his players struggling with the loss. The players went on to accomplish their mission of winning the Class 4A state championship. This season, the players took pride in defending the state title, and on Saturday, the Bruins won the championship again with an 11-1 victory over Sherwood of Montgomery County at the University of Maryland.

For Michael Marsh and the Chesapeake Cougars, the 2010 baseball season has been a chance to exceed expectations. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they fell one expectation short Friday night at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. Sherwood's pitching staff of Jamie Dejter and William Bouey held Chesapeake of Anne Arundel County to three hits and struck out 10 batters (Dejter six, Bouey four) en route to a 2-1 victory in the Class 4A state championship game. The victory is the second state title for the Montgomery County school, which also won the title in 2008.

From: Marlborough, New Zealand Price: $15 Serve with: Roast poultry, tuna steak This smooth, spicy, intensely flavorful pinot noir doesn't follow the classic style of the red Burgundies of France. It offers a distinctive taste of black pepper that's reminiscent of zinfandel, but in this wine, it works to a charm. It's a medium-bodied wine with all the other pinot signature flavors such as black cherry and wild berries. It's ready to drink now. This is what the American Dream looks like when you take soccer and fuse it with the promise and the possibilities of globalization: Oguchi Onyewu. Of course, Onyewu, 27, whose parents emigrated from Nigeria before he was born and raised him in Silver Spring and Olney, doesn't really look at it that way. He's just a hardworking, physically gifted, hyper-competitive center-back trying to fit in with a new team, AC Milan, which just happens to be one of the best soccer clubs in the world.
