More than two hours before the frozen dawn, the morning rush has begun beneath the bright lights of the red-canopied Sheetz in Joppatowne. At 5 a.m., cars, trucks and vans are tethered to nearly half of the 20 gas pumps at this super-sized convenience store, their drivers anxious to get out of the cold and rejoin the stream of headlights passing on Pulaski Highway. "Pump two, you must shut off your pickup while pumping gas," a disembodied voice calls out from a loudspeaker above the pumps.

To an antiques hound, every old toy or old piece of furniture is a potential treasure -- which helps explain why crowds braved a heat index of 105 degrees yesterday to stroll the ninth annual Havre de Grace Antique Street Fair.Stretching along the 400 block of Franklin St. at N. Union Ave., the fair gives antiques dealers from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware the chance to display and sell their antique furniture, toys, china and glass. Its two-day run ends today. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and free parking is available nearby.

Repeal is sought on gas-cost control Hoping to reduce prices at the pump, a group of Republican delegates is trying to repeal a state law prohibiting below-cost gasoline sales. Proponents of the repeal said in a hearing yesterday that the government shouldn't regulate prices, and that free-market competition will benefit consumers. During the spike in gas prices after Hurricane Katrina last fall, Maryland gas prices were among the highest in the nation, according to AAA surveys. "This bill would lower gas prices for all Marylanders," said Del. Warren E. Miller, a Howard County Republican who is the measure's chief sponsor.

Recent stories about two victims of Baltimore's continuing murder epidemic reminded readers of the pervasive pain of violent death in the city. Some officials have argued that despite Baltimore's high per-capita murder rate, the city is relatively safe for those who don't sell or use drugs. And there is also a tendency to assume that a murdered black youth had been involved in illegal activity. But Nov. 11, services were held for two innocent young black people killed by strangers for no apparent reason.

A man who unleashed bullets and obscenities at police in a July 2001 standoff outside Westminster wept and apologized to some of the officers yesterday in a Carroll County Circuit courtroom, where he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Earl William Delker Jr., 40, a Westminster-area drifter and former truck driver, repeatedly asked police to kill him early on the morning of July 29, 2001, saying "I want you to shoot me," a prosecutor said.
