PORTLAND, Ore. - For a while last night, it looked as though the Washington Wizards had continued to staunch the bleeding from a couple of weeks of losing close games, as they led the streaking Portland Trail Blazers nearly midway through the third period. And then the Trail Blazers sliced the Wizards open on both ends of the floor with a 25-6 outburst that closed the third quarter and cruised to a 95-80 win over Washington, the Wizards' 15th loss in their past 19 games. "Physically, they knocked us off the ball and they were the aggressors," said Washington coach Doug Collins.

Reading Time: Two Minutes. While it's true this week's Kemper Open at Avenel in Potomac has had a "Who's He" instead of a "Who's Who" list of winners of late -- Grant Waite, Morris Hatalsky, Billy Andrade -- that figures to change momentarily with the tourney hosting its best field in a decade: Tom Kite, Payne Stewart, John Daly, Lee Janzen, Lanny Wadkins, Phil Mickelson (back from a broken leg), Curtis Strange, et al.* Actually, it's no big deal that the New York Rangers, who start the Stanley Cup final against the Vancouver Canucks tonight, haven't claimed the beloved cup over the last 54 seasons.

SEATTLE -- They were back home, in a building where they had lost just five games this season. They had not lost three in a row all year. Coach George Karl kept promising that his team was getting close, and one figured that the Seattle SuperSonics, after an encouraging Game 2, could well be on the verge of playing their best game of this NBA Finals.Guess again. The Chicago Bulls came out having what Karl described as "killer eyes." And in a series where they have yet to play their best ball, the Bulls came awfully close last night as they built a 22-point first-half lead on the way to a 108-86 victory.
