Mr. and Mrs. Michael Friedman of Lutherville, MD are proud to announce the marriage of their daughter, Michele Friedman, to Mr. John Langley Sharkey, son of Dr. and Mrs. Edward W. Sharkey of Leesburg, FL. The wedding took place on May 28, 2007 in Cancun, Mexico. Michele is a 1994 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Boston University in Biomedical Engineering and a 2007 Summa Cum Laude PharmD graduate of the University of Maryland. She is a Registered Pharmacist employed by CVS. John is a 1991 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Finance.

After seven years as director of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, Jeffrey Sharkey is stepping down. He will remain with the conservatory until a successor is named. "So much of what I hoped to accomplish I feel I have accomplished," Sharkey, 48, said Friday. "But there's an arc to a leadership position. I think that fresh eyes are always a good thing. A new burst of energy will be good for Peabody, and for me, too. " Peabody, the nation's oldest conservatory, opened in 1866.

CYNTHIA HOPE SHARKEY, 59. Cynthia was the beloved mother of Kelly Sharkey of Baldwin, MD and Louis Sharkey and his wife Charmain, and the beloved daughter of George Samos of Port Richey, FL and Katherine (nee Stavrides) Samos of Athens, Greece. Cynthia died unexpectedly of cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital early Tuesday morning, November 1, 2005. She was born Cynthia Hope Samos in Long Island, NY and raised in Lutherville, MD and has lived for many years in Baldwin, MD. She was an avid gardener and cat lover and her greatest joy was spending time with her friends playing Bingo at Boring Volunteer Fire Dept.

Louis S. Sharkey, a longtime Westminster restaurateur who owned five restaurants, including a drive-in with carhops in the 1950s, died Tuesday of heart failure at Carroll County General Hospital. He was 85."He just loved to cook, and he did a little of everything at all of the restaurants," said his son Phillip Sharkey of Towson.Mr. Sharkey's first establishment was the American Restaurant on Main Street in Westminster, which he bought in 1938 and operated until 1958. He later owned the Center Restaurant, Sharkey's Drive In and the Patio.

Jeffrey Sharkey, the No. 2 administrator at the Cleveland Institute of Music, has been named to the No. 1 post at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. The Delaware-born Sharkey will start work as Peabody director Oct. 1, succeeding Robert Sirota. Sirota resigned last June to become president of the Manhattan School of Music, where Sharkey earned his undergraduate degree. "Bob Sirota left the school in really good shape," Mark Katz, a Peabody faculty member who served on the search committee for a new director, said yesterday.

Louisa H. Prem, 98, homemaker, nature loverLouisa H. Prem, a homemaker and former Northwood resident, died Saturday of respiratory failure at Manor Care Roland Park. She was 98.Mrs. Prem was interested in flowers and animals in their natural state and had visited Africa several years ago. She also took her children on monthlong automobile trips during the summer and visited the 48 contiguous states and many national parks.The former Louisa Sachs was born and raised on her father's dairy farm in the 2500 block of Harford Road.

As the director of the Peabody Institute, Jeffrey Sharkey is the leader of undergraduate and graduate students in the Peabody Conservatory and Preparatory at the music school at the Johns Hopkins University. Sharkey has been the director for two years, and is an acclaimed pianist and composer as well. Sharkey's music will be featured in a concert at the Peabody Conservatory on Sept. 24 with Jonathan Carney, violinist and concertmaster for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. "A Suitable Boy" by Vikram Seth It's a panoramic novel of India just before independence.

When it comes to having a vision, Jeffrey Sharkey, the new director of the Peabody Institute, doesn't fool around. "He believes that music will eventually save the world," says Doreen Falby, a faculty member of the school's preparatory division and director of the Peabody Children's Chorus. It's easy to get a sense of that faith as Sharkey takes a short lunch break one afternoon at the institute, located in the shadow of Baltimore's Washington Monument on Mount Vernon Place. While teaching English to Hispanic immigrants in Carroll County, Jenni Sharkey found herself inundated with parents' questions about vaccinations and other requirements for enrolling students in school. Similarly, Elena Hartley was approached by Hispanic immigrants who attend the Spanish-speaking Mass at St. John Roman Catholic Church in Westminster, inquiring about apartment rentals and other social service needs. Both women saw a need to serve the growing Hispanic population in Carroll County.
