It is regrettable that you allow a forum for the kind of casual, stupid bigotry shown in letters such as Dana Ely's and Will Placek's The defects of their kind of thinking rest in a cluster of false, indeed absurd assumptions about private religion and public civil law. Your article about Marylanders of Syrian descent imploring the U.S. government to provide humanitarian aid and arms to the Free Syrian Army correctly cited President Bashar Assad's ruthless attacks on his civilian opponents ("Marylanders helping cause in their Syrian homeland," July 7). Yet the report completely ignored the horrific slaughter of Christians by radical Islamist members of the FSA, whose stated goal is not just the ouster of Mr. Assad, but the imposition of strict Sharia law in Syria.

GUSAU, Nigeria -- The Zuma Hotel used to be the trendiest spot in the dusty, wind-swept capital of Nigeria's northern Zamfara state. Patrons sipped beer and cocktails at the bar, danced to the latest music in the hotel's disco and socialized into the wee hours. That was until October, when the state outlawed drinking, partying and so-called lewd behavior as it introduced Sharia law -- the Islamic penal code based on the Koran. In December, the Zuma was raided and shut down. "I wasn't given any notice that they would close me down," said owner Vincent Umeadi.

Former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich's recent Op-Ed attempts to paint President Obama as part of our Middle East problem ("As Middle East burns, Obama fiddles," Sept. 30). His suggestion that moderate Muslims help remove the threat from radical Islam to our culture exposes a typically shallow appreciation of the situation. The politically correct mantra that all our problems are caused by a small faction of Islamist terrorists is disingenuous at best. From moderate believers to radical fundamentalists, Muslims of all stripes abhor our promiscuity, women's equality, mixing of the sexes, homosexuality and tolerance for drugs and alcohol.

It is about time that Americans stop trying to appease a religion and people who simply will not accept any alternative to Islam ("Understanding Arab anger," Sept. 19). The Muslim holy book, the Quran, and the teachings of Islam are very clear: If you are not with them, you are an infidel. The goal of the Islamic faith is to spread Sharia law to the ends of the earth at all costs. If we get in the way we are expendable. The American way is not compatible with Islam. Freedom of speech, no matter how offensive, is not part of its tradition.

LET US HOPE that the successor to Pope John Paul II, the first pope in history to step inside a mosque, will continue his unprecedented policy of talking to the Muslim world. Muslim leaders who expressed sympathy after his death did not do so simply because the pope opposed the invasion of Iraq or spoke out against the wall of separation in the Israeli-occupied territories. They did so because the pope believed firmly that Christianity should engage in a dialogue with Islam. Western and Middle Eastern cultures have been in contact since ancient times.

Radical Islamists love to scream about the "decadent" West. Everything from our operas to our attitudes about women outrage these loud, pious critics. As part of their condemnation, fundamentalist Muslims say they put a higher premium on family values and reverence for the past than crass, modern Americans and Europeans do. But that is hardly true. In Wahhabist Saudi Arabia, unforgiving sharia law administered by stern state clerics dictates cutting off a hand for theft. Is there less stealing, then?

Muslims opens slow and for a while seems unsure of where it wants to go. But those who stay with this two-hour Frontline report on PBS tonight will be rewarded with an understanding of modern-day Islam unlike anything television has ever been able to deliver before. And that is no small matter of public service in a nation where many of us are still wondering how terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center could be carried out in the name of this religion, and how someone like Osama bin Laden could call it a "holy" war. This is not a history of Islam.

Craig Benedict Baxam was surfing the Internet from his Army base in South Korea last summer when he came across an Islamic religious website. The soldier from Laurel had never been particularly religious. But with his deployment and his time in the military coming to an end, prosecutors say, an online article about Judgment Day spoke to him. When he returned to Maryland, they say, he began to make plans to live out his life in a land governed by Sharia law. He would never make it. Baxam, 24, was charged by federal authorities Monday with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

The Columbia Association's decision to hold women-only swim times is yet another example of a disturbing trend in this country which forces us all, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, into Sharia compliance. Like the kudzu weed, which now covers over 7 million acres of the American Southeast, the threat of "creeping Sharia" will adversely and unalterably change the social, cultural and political landscape of this country forever. Jesse Newburn, a spokeswoman with the Columbia Association, proudly proclaims that the "CA was founded on inclusion.

And so it begins. Sharia law making its way into our culture, nibble by nibble, bite by bite until one day we wake up and realize that our American way of life has been destroyed and overtaken by another culture. Shehlla Khan, a Muslim Howard County resident, complained that she was concerned about people watching her swim in the conservative, cover-all dress required by Islamic dress codes, and thinking: "What's wrong? Why can't you take it off?" First of all, how does Ms. Khan know what others are thinking?

WASHINGTON - The unfolding of events in Sudan in recent months - to say nothing of years - has provided conspicuous evidence of the brutality that is inevitably unleashed by Islamist regimes. Long engaged in a bloody drive to impose the dictates of radical Islam on Christians and animists in the southern part of the country, Khartoum has more recently turned on its co-religionists in the Darfur region in a genocidal campaign. Despite the attention being paid to Sudan, the West has yet to recognize that jihad is being waged for the whole of Africa.

Del. Ron George ("Sharia law is real threat to American liberties," Aug 24) obviously failed to grasp the meaning in the opposition to anti-Sharia movements. Hardly anybody wants Sharia law in America, which, if it were implemented, would indeed be detrimental to our way of life - just like Christian or Jewish law has no place in a secular democracy. The issue is not that we should permit Sharia law, but that there is no Sharia law in American jurisprudence, and that our Constitution wouldn't allow it under the separation of church and state.

Del. Ron George, in his naive anti-Sharia diatribe ("Sharia law is a real threat to American liberties," Aug. 24), seems to overlook the obvious remedy - the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Since Mr. George, surprisingly an actual member of the Maryland House of Delegates, claims to be one of those "who seek to safeguard liberty," he might want to check out the document that our founders wrote for this very purpose and be reassured that there is absolutely no way Sharia law or any other religious dogma could ever be recognized as having a legal basis in America.

Del. Ron George from Annapolis objects to those who make light of the anti-Sharia movement in the U.S. ("Sharia law is a real threat to American liberties," Aug. 24.) He argues that imposing Sharia law is the stated goal of Islamic extremists like al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, the Taliban and Hamas. He may be right, but how does that lead to the conclusion that we in the U.S. are threatened by the imposition of Sharia law in this country? As a Republican, Delegate George surely doesn't believe that the Taliban, al-Qaida, Hamas or Hezbollah are poised to overrun us and establish Sharia law here by force.
