Your Midweek Madness supplier confesses ignorance of Shakira. Please forgive. The first awareness of this global sensation came a couple days ago with the accidental discovery of a cover made of one of Shakira's mega-hits, "Hips Don't Lie," sung by an a cappella ensemble of Oxford University students called Out of the Blue. (They've been raising money to support a children's hospice with downloads of the performance .) The infectious Out of the Blue video has gone viral, needless to say, so it is posted here only for the benefit of those few who remain pitifully unaware of Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" or a bunch of "Glee"-worthy, wiggling warblers from a posh British school.

Hips don't lie, Shakira famously sings, but they've sure helped her win accolades, as the Colombian sensation scooped up a field-leading five nominations for the seventh annual Latin Grammy Awards, announced yesterday in New York. The belly-dancing singer-songwriter was the only artist to be named in the song, record and album categories, for her Spanish-language CD Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 and its reggaeton-tinged hit "La Tortura." This marks a triumph for Shakira's bicultural and bilingual music-making strategy, crowning her the most completely adapted crossover performer in contemporary pop music.

Shakira was sick of being a celebrity. Colombia's sensationally successful singer-songwriter had just come off her Oral Fixation tour this year, taking her to 140 cities on five continents to perform for 2.5 million fans. But even stardom can be a drag. So she put away her revealing sequined gowns and hip-hugging pants, donned jeans and sneakers, tucked her famous shock of dyed hair under a cap and went undercover as a summer student at University of California, Los Angeles. She enrolled in a history of Western civilization course under her middle and last names, Isabel Mebarak, telling clueless classmates she was visiting from Colombia.

This is how life changed for Shakira Smith, Morgan State women's basketball player and the nation's best at stealing the ball. You're a cheerleader at a Boys and Girls Club in Prince George's County who morphs into a long-limbed basketball player likened to Scottie Pippen when recruiters come calling. When you go away to school, you leave your childhood friends behind. And when you go from admiring your brother, Basil, to burying him, his dreams become yours, like going to college and playing basketball there.

Morgan State Coach: Gerard Garlic, second season at Morgan (17-12). Affiliation: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. 1999-2000 record: 17-12 (12-6 in MEAC). Radio: None. Arena: Hill Field House (5,000). Consensus MEAC favorite: Hampton. Consensus Morgan prediction: Fourth. Starters lost: One. Outlook: The main question is how Garlic will replace front-court star Monique Liddell. Otherwise, the Bears didn't lose anyone else. Perimeter player Shakira Smith is the team's strongest player, leading a well-balanced backcourt that includes Angela Creek, Lisa Mickens and Sherie Cornish.

The second night of the intense Battle Rounds took place last night. Coaches Blake, Adam, Usher and Shakira were forced to make tough decisions while assembling the teams they believe hold "the Voice. " Night two held no punches as some judges praised some contestants and others not so much. I think Usher is still trying to figure what Jeff Lewis thought was so hilarious during rehearsals. *insert scowling Usher eyebrow* Team Adam: Michael Austin vs. Warren Stone, “My Kind of Party” by Jason Aldean It was the battle of the civil service men as Deputy Sheriff Michael Austin (and his black cowboy hat)

After a long and intense three weeks of blind auditions, all four coaches have filled their teams. During last night's episode, each coach got straight to the point when picking the final member of their team. In this final round, there was much disappointment from both the coaches and those unlucky few who didn't' make a team. No one seemed more upset than Carson Daly when his longtime idol Mark Lennon didn't get picked. Team Blake was the first team to come together, as Blake chose dancer-turned-Warped Tour performer Jaqui Sandell.

In the final week of the blind audition round, coaches Blake, Adam, Shakira and Usher waste no time choosing the 12 that will go on and compete to become this season's Voice.  The coaches spent last night's episode hoping to find the three or four remaining members of their teams. While it was fun to watch each coach build the anticipation that comes with pushing the big red button, it was far more entertaining to watch the judges fight for the attention of two of the night's best competitors.
