A 7-year-old Columbia girl reported that she was sexually assaulted Tuesday evening as she walked home from a neighborhood playground, according to Howard County police. Police said the child told family members that four young men with dreadlock hairstyles accosted her around 7 p.m. in the 9600 block of Basket Ring Road as she walked home from a playground. Three had motor scooters, she said, and the fourth rode a bicycle. She said they grabbed her and assaulted her, though police later said she was not raped.

A Dundalk man who prosecutors say sexually abused his girlfriend's daughter for about nine years has been sentenced to 48 years in prison. A Baltimore man received twin life sentences Wednesday for sexually assaulting and murdering his children's mother at a house where she was staying in the city's Waltherson neighborhood. Shawn Stevenson, 43, had been in a relationship with Somchanh Sipayboun for 13 years, but they had been fighting in the months before her death, according to prosecutors. Sipayboun moved out and took her children to live her sister in the 5400 block of Hilburn Avenue in a home that the couple owned.

Reports of sexual assaults at the Naval Academy doubled last year, the fourth straight year the number has increased, according to the Defense Department. But do the findings of the Pentagon report on sexual harassment and assaults mean that such incidents are on the rise in Annapolis? Or do they show that midshipmen have grown more aware of sexual assault and are more likely to report it to authorities? Academy officials and critics alike hope it's the latter — but say it is impossible to know for certain.

An 18-year-old who told relatives and police that she twice had consensual sexual encounters with a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps instructor over a two-day period last May while she was a high school student changed her account on the witness stand Monday, testifying that there had been three encounters. The woman, who was 17 at the time of the alleged incidents and about to graduate from Atholton High School in Columbia, told a jury that Sgt. Charles Ray Moore of Bowie told her to go into the supply closet of the JROTC room at the Columbia school on three successive days last spring, kissing and fondling her the first two days and having sexual intercourse with her on the third.

A freshman Maryland men's lacrosse player was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a sleeping woman at a Zac Brown Band concert in Virginia on Sunday, police said. Benjamin Chisolm, 19, of Davidsonville, is accused of molesting a 49-year-old woman who had fallen asleep in the lawn area during the concert at Jiffy Lube Live pavilion in Bristow, Va. The woman told police she awoke around 8:30 p.m. to find an unknown man, later identified as Chisolm, lying beside her and touching her inappropriately.

A 35-year-old Odenton man was charged with kidnapping and sexual assault after a woman was forced into a car in Baltimore, police said.The woman was walking along Hanover Street in Baltimore at 4:29 a.m. when a man with a gun pulled up next to her and forced her into his car, police said. The man drove to Anne Arundel County, sexually assaulted the woman and later stopped on Oakton Road near Route 175.After demanding and receiving $150, the man started choking the woman, police said. She managed to fight him off, then ran to a nearby house.

A 9-year-old High Point Elementary School pupil who said she was sexually assaulted in a bathroom at the Pasadena school this month recanted her claim Tuesday, Anne Arundel County police said. The girl had told authorities that a man with "yellow stained teeth" and "long dirty fingernails" had fondled her March 9, according to a police news release. Police said yesterday that they do not intend to charge the girl.
