John R. Reckord Sr., a retired Bethlehem Steel Corp. rate setter and avid Chesapeake Bay sailor, died Tuesday at his Baynesville home of complications from a fall he suffered last month. He was 85. Mr. Reckord was born at home in Cockeysville and was raised there and in Towson. He was a 1938 graduate of Towson High School and completed a correspondence course in industrial engineering from International Correspondence Schools. He began working at Sparrows Point as a toolmaker in 1939 but left in 1944 to enlist in the Navy.

The Anne Arundel Community College volleyball team may have lost its best setter, but it gained a new philosophy."Everyone can set" is the rallying cry heard at practice these days, now that Stacey Pirotte has taken her immense passing skills to the University of Maryland Baltimore County.What Pirotte also did was transform sophomore Josie Boddy from last year's Most Improved Player to one of this season's most important.The Arundel High School graduate has gone from being an accomplished hitter to a novice setter, after her coaches had auditioned everyone for the vacated role.

Sydney Biniak Howard, hitter, senior As the engine behind the No. 3 Lions' offense, the 2012 All-Howard County first-team pick will be counted on to deliver the kills that the team needs to compete in a very tough league. Biniak finished with 166 kills last season, and she also had 27 blocks and 168 digs. Madison Carter South River, hitter, junior A great athlete who has already verbally committed to Penn State for lacrosse, Carter provides the power for the No. 11 Seahawks' offense.

Add a high on-base percentage table-setter to the Orioles' wish list of major needs this month. Chelsea Owensby has been Mount de Sales' ace in the hole for the last few years. On Thursday, her aces kept the Sailors out of the hole - literally. The junior setter served nine of No. 11 Mount de Sales' 14 aces in a 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference upset victory at No. 2 St. Paul's. Owensby also contributed 25 assists. Taylor Beaumont and Jodi Schneider led Mount de Sales (8-1, 6-1) with 10 kills each. Kabria Haskins led the Gators (7-1, 5-1)

Robert L. Bunting Sr., a veteran of World War II who was wounded at Iwo Jima and later became a tile setter, died of lung disease April 17 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in downtown Baltimore. He was 87 and lived in Hamilton. Born in Baltimore and raised on Forrester Avenue, he attended a public vocational school and assembled aircraft at the old Glenn L. Martin plant in Middle River. He joined the Marine Corps during World War II and served in the Pacific. He was wounded in the left arm during the Battle of Iwo Jima and spent two years at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Jane W. Courtney, a former newspaper columnist, accomplished needlepoint worker and volunteer, died Thursday of a stroke at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She was 76. The daughter of a salesman and a seamstress, the former Jane Weismuller was born and raised in Livingston, N.J. She was a graduate of Livingston High School. After her marriage to James M. Courtney Jr., a chemical engineer, in 1951, the couple lived in Newark, and later moved to Mendham, N.J. Mrs. Courtney studied writing at the County College of Morris in Morristown, N.J., and at New York University's New School.
