Seton Keough's volleyball team didn't want to share the Catholic League title with anyone. That's why the Gators went out and swept Mercy off its home court yesterday, 15-13, 15-7, 15-9."

The post-game comments of St. Mary's senior forward Tara Foran may have been understated, but they provided a more accurate depiction of yesterday's game against Seton Keough than the scoreboard."

Seton Keough senior forward Katie Sparks isn't the flashiest, the quickest or the most athletic player on her team.Sometimes her name doesn't even appear in the box score. But because of her defense and her all-around smart play, Seton Keough coach Jim Stromberg once said that "even if she doesn't score a point, we don't win unless she's on the court."Yesterday, Sparks gave the Gators an added bonus. She scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead sixth-ranked and top-seeded Seton Keough to a 54-28 victory over visiting and eighth-seeded Mercy in a Catholic League Tournament quarterfinal.

Top-ranked Seton Keough yesterday showed how a team can shoot 28 percent and still win a basketball game.Seton Keough used an aggressive man-to-man defense that limited No. 15 Mercy to just 20-percent shooting from the field, and the Gators hung on for a 37-31 victory over the host Magic in a Catholic League game. The Gators swarmed all over Mercy (14-7, 4-5) and rarely gave the Magic any good looks at the basket.Mercy finished 10 of 49 from the field -- and the Magic needed to hit four of their last six shots to do that well.

Seton Keough has the luxury of being able to march out two pitchers in Robi Zimmerman and Hannah Tavik who routinely dominate the opposition. In Friday's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland showdown with third-ranked Mercy, it was Tavik's turn to take the ball, and she responded with another stellar outing in the second-ranked Gators' 3-0 victory. Tavik allowed just two hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no walks, giving visiting Seton Keough sole possession of first place in the IAAM A Conference midway through the season with a 4-0 record (7-1 overall)

After last night's game against Seton Keough, St. Frances coach Jerome Shelton probably will cringe every time he hears the sound of a whistle being blown. When Shelton reflects on his team's grit and determination, however, a smile likely will replace his scowl.Despite having all five starters in foul trouble, fourth-ranked St. Frances (10-1) rallied from a seven-point third-quarter deficit to defeat No. 15 Seton Keough (6-4), 61-52, in the Holly Division of the Holly & Hoops Tournament at Essex Community College.

Mount Hebron coach Dave Greenberg has been around long enough not to take any team lightly. It has become common, however, for Greenberg to express concern about an opponent, then watch his team cruise to victory. This time, he wasn't kidding.Unranked Seton Keough played visiting Mount Hebron even until the final three minutes, when the third-ranked Vikings pulled away for a hard-fought, 53-44 win yesterday. The game bore little resemblance to last season's meeting between the two teams, which Mount Hebron won by 28 points.

For three quarters and the first five minutes of the fourth of yesterday's Catholic League game against Seton Keough, the Institute of Notre Dame had contained junior Melanie Morris, the Gators' leading scorer. Then came the game's final three minutes.Having been held to six points and just one field goal until that point, Morris seized control. Driving and spinning her way down the lane, Morris scored visiting Seton Keough's last six points, as the ninth-ranked Gators edged the 16th-ranked Indians, 45-43.
