Ten years ago, my husband John and I moved into a retirement condo and met our new neighbors. They were a nice, older couple - typical Baltimoreans with a passion for family, Maryland crabs and the Orioles. I still remember the day my husband rushed in the door with news that would elevate Chick Serio's status from that of "typical Baltimorean" to superhero. "Chick was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on Iwo Jima!" John said. "We're living across the hall from a war hero!"

The black-and-white Polaroid photo shows a building tilting precipitously to the right. Above what appears to be a picture window, a curving line of type clearly spells out "The Old Gold Store. " But when Ted Serios snapped that shot on May 13, 1965, he was sitting inside a hotel room, and the camera was pointed directly at his face. More than 46 years later, there's no consensus as to whether what Serios described as a "thoughtograph" is an example of a genuine paranormal event, or if it ranks among history's most clever cons.

When Ron Serio dug beneath the 800-square-foot bungalow he bought in 1978 to create a basement, he separated so many stones from the dirt that he used only some of the rocks for the exterior of the one-story home's foundation. He salvaged chestnut boards from old outbuildings on the property for paneling. That alone took 15 years. "I had a lot of time leaning on that shovel to think about what I wanted to do with the place," Serio said. What he wanted was to capitalize on the storybook setting.
