Seniors

On April 16, leaders from county and state agencies, the court system and elected officials met for a briefing regarding the increasing number of seniors in Harford County, and the community support families need to care for older family members. Harford County Executive David R. Craig spearheaded the Aging Summit, focusing on the needs of vulnerable senior adults in Harford County. The summit was held in partnership with the Harford County State Attorney Joe Cassilly and the Harford County Sheriff Jesse Bane.

After Saturday's contest at No. 11 Maryland, Colgate will retire to the offseason, and senior attackman Peter Baum will graduate and begin the next stage of his life. One of his pursuits would be to help continue the growth of lacrosse in his native state of Oregon. The Portland native refined his talent at Lincoln High School and with the West Coast Starz. The first player west of the Mississippi River to win the Tewaaraton Award, Baum is one of several Division I players from Oregon, including Drexel senior midfielder Aaron Prosser and Syracuse redshirt sophomore midfielder Henry Schoonmaker.

On Senior Day, with the county championship on the line, Glenelg's Leah Allen delivered a performance befitting the reigning Howard County Player of the Year. The senior shortstop hit two home runs and made nine putouts in the field, leading the way to a 6-4 victory over No. 5 Atholton that gave the No. 2 Gladiators sole possession of the county title. "As a team we all knew we had to step up today, and being my last regular season home game, there was definitely a little extra motivation," Allen said.

While junior Joe Fletcher has emerged as Loyola's shutdown defenseman and seniors Scott Ratliff and Josh Hawkins have headlined one of the more prolific Rope units in Division I, Reid Acton has stood in the background. But that's not how coach Charley Toomey feels about the senior defenseman. Acton, a three-year starter, is a security blanket for the No. 5 Greyhounds (11-3), who will meet No. 8 Ohio State (10-3) in a semifinal of the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament at Hobart on Thursday night.

Senior Zach Palmer returned to No. 13 Johns Hopkins after sitting out two games with an undisclosed injury and finished with zero points on four shots in Saturday's 8-4 loss to then-No. 7 Loyola. But rather than take up his usual spot on attack with sophomore Wells Stanwick and junior Brandon Benn, Palmer ran with seniors John Ranagan and John Greeley as members of the second midfield. Senior John Kaestner made his third consecutive start with Stanwick and Benn for the Blue Jays (8-5)

No one player makes - or breaks - a team. That is especially true for No. 11 Maryland, where the concept of team is emphasized in nearly every comment from the players and coach John Tillman. John Haus is one of the Terps who fully endorses that model. But if anyone is looking to cast blame for the team's recent offensive woes, the senior midfielder is prepared to absorb the criticism. “I think all over, we've been low in production. As a senior, I take some of that on my shoulders,” he said Tuesday.

Of the 11 different players who have started in UMBC's midfield, freshman Pat Young has the most starts with 11 and junior Conor Finch is second with six. Next on that list is senior Joe Lustgarten, who has made five starts after spending the last two seasons as a starting attackman. As the Retrievers prepare for Thursday's America East tournament semifinal against Hartford at Stony Brook, Lustgarten is slated to make his fifth consecutive start in the midfield. In the team's last four contests, he has scored four goals on nine shots and assisted on five others.

Leave it to Stevenson coach Paul Cantabene to find a scoring threat in a former defensive player. After spending the first three years of his career as a short-stick defensive midfielder, Peter Green has blossomed as a weapon for the No. 4 Mustangs (15-2), leading all midfielders with 27 goals and 38 points. The Hereford native and graduate has scored three more goals than the combined number of shots he took in his first three seasons, but to hear Cantabene - who has built some of Division III's most prolific offenses in recent years  - talk, this is what he and staff anticipated from Green.

Should the McDonogh boys lacrosse team enjoy an extended run in the upcoming Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs, the Eagles will likely look back on Tuesday's performance against visiting St. Paul's as a character-building foundation. Senior Austin Frederick was the catalyst, tying the game with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter with his sixth goal of the day. Hil Blaze won the faceoff to start overtime, and when Trey McGee found open space on the left side and buried a shot 13 seconds into the extra time, the No. 3 Eagles were celebrating a dramatic 11-10 win over the No. 2 Crusaders.
