With thunderstorms in the area expected to linger until after sunset, the coaches of No. 1 McDonogh and No. 9 Maryvale postponed their IAAM A Conference girls lacrosse semifinal until tomorrow at 4 p.m. The teams waited about 30 minutes past the 4:30 p.m. start time Wednesday, but a storm lingered nearby. McDonogh coach Chris Robinson and Maryvale coach Jessica Randisi agreed that they did not want to start the game and be forced to stop if another storm rolled past McDonogh's Owings Mills campus.

Despite being the top seed in the Ivy League tournament, Cornell was stunned, 14-13, in overtime by No. 12 Princeton. That result cost the Big Red one of the eight seeds in the NCAA tournament and the right to host a home game in the first round. No. 2 Cornell (12-3) will visit No. 11 and sixth-seeded Maryland (10-3) at Byrd Stadium in College Park this Sunday, but Terps coach John Tillman is not as concerned about the Big Red's last outing as he is about that team's entire season.

The six-goal explosion by redshirt freshman midfielder Ben McCarty that powered Towson's 11-8 upset of No. 15 Drexel in Wednesday's Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinal must have shocked the Dragons, who probably did not expect McCarty to match his season total in goals in one contest. Even McCarty's coach, Shawn Nadelen, said he did not envision that performance. “I can't say I anticipated that,” Nadelen said with a chuckle Thursday morning. “I'm excited for him to do that.

If it's the Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse tournament, it must be a one-goal win for Towson. For the third straight time, the Tigers nipped an opponent by one goal in a CAA postseason game, edging Drexel for an 8-7 comeback victory Friday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex. Last season, Towson beat Drexel, 12-11, in the semifinal and went on to slip past James Madison, 8-7, for the championship. This time, the top-seeded Tigers (9-8) scored twice in the final three minutes and their defense did the rest to ensure the chance to defend their title Sunday at 1 p.m. against Hofstra.

Joe Lustgarten scored the final two goals, including the game-winner with 55seconds left and an insurance goal 21seconds later, to cap a 6-0 run as the third-seeded UMBC men's lacrosse team upset second-seeded Hartford, 15-13, in an America East Conference semifinal at Stony Brook's LaValle Stadium. The Retrievers (7-7) advance to their first championship game since 2009 and will meet No. 10 Albany on Saturday at 10 a.m.. Lustgarten led the Retrievers with four goals and two assists, while Scott Jones and freshman Pat Young added three goals each.

UMBC has enjoyed some memorable comebacks wins during Don Zimmerman's tenure. Just a couple that come to mind include a five-goal rally to edge Maryland, 8-7, on March 6, 2012 and a 5-1 fourth quarter to nip Albany, 14-13, in an America East tournament final on May 3, 2008. But the longtime coach said that the Retrievers' six-goal explosion in Thursday's 15-13 decision over Hartford in a conference tournament semifinal at Stony Brook may have been one of best he witnessed. “That was a special comeback, especially against a team like Hartford in a championship setting,” Zimmerman said Friday morning.

When No. 10 Washington College and No. 2 Dickinson meet in Wednesday night's Centennial Conference tournament semifinal, it will be a rematch of the April 13 regular-season meeting in which the Shoremen suffered a 15-10 setback in Chestertown. If Washington (12-3) harbors any hope of pulling off the upset and tagging the Red Devils (15-0) with their first loss of the season, the Shoremen must avoid surrendering runs that plagued them in the first contest. Dickinson scored all five goals of the second quarter to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 advantage, embarked on a 4-0 spurt in a span of 1 minute, 46 seconds of the third period to take a 12-6 lead, and then scored three unanswered goals in 2:03 of the fourth quarter to assume a 15-9 advantage.

Wednesday night's Centennial Conference tournament semifinal against No. 2 Dickinson would normally be an unenviable task for any opponent. But coach Jeff Shirk said his No. 10 Washington College squad (12-3) is eager for a rematch of a 15-10 loss to the Red Devils (15-0) on April 13. “I think our guys are excited,” Shirk said Tuesday morning. “There have been a couple bumps in the road that everybody knows about, and the fact that we're actually in the tournament has guys excited.

Top seed and No. 1 Maryland beat Virginia, 13-9, on Friday at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C., to advance to its sixth straight Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse championship game. The Terps (18-0) were led by Katie Schwarzmann , Kelly McPartland, Brooke Griffin and Alex Aust, who each had a hat trick. Schwarzmann moved to third all time in career goals at Maryland (221). Maryland, seeking its fifth straight ACC title, plays third-seeded host North Carolina on Sunday at 5 p.m. No. 12 Navy 9, Lafayette 8: Lindsay Rheiner scored her second goal with 11:10 left for a 9-7 Mids lead and host Navy (17-1)

While Maryland goes back to the drawing board, Virginia will find itself playing for the ACC men's lacrosse championship and maybe even a berth in the NCAA tournament. Those prospects might have seemed unlikely a little more than two weeks ago, with the Cavaliers mired in a six-game losing streak, their longest in nearly 50 years, and the Terps ranked No. 1 nationally. But they were driven home Friday evening, when unranked Virginia bounced top-seeded Maryland in the ACC tournament semifinals 13-6 at Kenan Stadium.
