Josh Selby has played in many different cities in the past year, but he is back in a comfortable atmosphere - at least for a little while. After a disappointing 2012-13 NBA season in which the Lake Clifton graduate bounced around with five teams in five months, Selby is returning home to Baltimore for several days to run a charity event. On Saturday, Selby is hosting the Walk-Away Campaign at Margaret Brent Elementary-Middle, an event to help combat youth violence and make Baltimore more safe.

Former Lake Clifton star Josh Selby was named co-MVP of the Las Vegas Summer League, the NBAannounced Sunday. The second-year Memphis Grizzlies guard averaged 24.2 points on 55.7-percent shooting in five summer-league games. He shot 64.3 percent on 3-pointers, and exploded for a summer league-best 35 points last Tuesday against Washington. It was a notable stretch for a player who has struggled to find a steady NBA role. Selby, 21, averaged just 2.3 points in 8.5 minutes his rookie season.

Josh Selby emerges from the Stevenson University locker room, his hot pink sneakers with silver trim sparkling as he takes the floor. The Lake Clifton graduate's eye-catching shoes - which he says he wears to raise breast cancer awareness - quickly become an afterthought once play begins and his flashy game is on display. In the first quarter of Ravens wide receiver LaQuan Williams' charity basketball game late last month, Selby finds himself stuck in a corner beyond the arc, tightly guarded.

To the Memphis Grizzlies — who snagged the Lake Clifton graduate with the 49th pick in Thursday's NBA Draft — Selby represents an investment of minimal risk, but one that still has the potential for a big return. It wasn't a marriage many people saw coming. The Grizzlies never even had Selby in for a workout. "I was very surprised," Selby said. "I didn't have any contact with them [before the draft]

With the 36th pick in Thursday night's NBA draft, former Maryland Terrapins forward Jordan Williams' dreams became a reality. Thirteen picks later, a turbulent past year for Baltimore native Josh Selby culminated with his joining Williams among the highest ranks of professional basketball. Williams and Selby (Lake Clifton) were selected by the New Jersey Nets and Memphis Grizzlies, respectively, in the second round of the draft at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Because they weren't first-round selections, they won't earn guaranteed contracts as the NBA heads into a year of uncertainty in which the league's owners could lock out the players because of disagreements over a new collective bargaining agreement.

Several months ago, Josh Selby was talking on the phone to mentor Carmelo Anthony. It was just a friendly conversation between two men who know exactly what it feels like to be a basketball prodigy from inner city Baltimore. You're going to hear a lot of criticism, Anthony said. Your game is going to be picked apart, and you're going to be worn down by what feels like a never-ending cycle of workouts and interviews.
