Vernon E. Seibert, a former athletic director and coach at Glenelg High School who had been an outstanding football player during the 1940s at College Park, died Saturday of cancer at Union Hospital in Elkton. The longtime Columbia resident was 88. "You could write a book about Vernon Seibert. What a character. The stories about him are legend," said Dennis P. Cole, who had been head football coach at Glenelg in the 1980s and retired five years ago. "He was always held in high-esteem but was not the kind of buddy-buddy type of football coach when it came to the kids," he said.

Frank Vollmerhausen, a retired construction inspector, died of an intestinal obstruction March 31 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. He was 83. Mr. Vollmerhausen was born and raised in Savage. He left school in the eighth grade and went to work on his family's farm. During World War II, he served in the Army's 533rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war, Mr. Vollmerhausen worked for nearly three decades for Stubbs Construction Co. in Bethesda.

Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland.Seibert, 57, died Tuesday at North Arundel Hospital after a brief bout with cancer.Born in Baltimore, she graduated from Southern Senior High Schoolin 1952 and worked for eight years as a secretary and property manager with Schwartz Realty in Deale. She was a den mother of Cub Scout Pack 853 and a troop leader of Brownie Troop 1104, both in Shadyside.

DAYTON, Ohio -- All the wild talk and rumors threw Scott Seibert into a dark mood. People were fretting about losing their jobs, their homes and their savings. Seibert couldn't wait to leave early from the Delphi Corp. factory where he has worked for the last 29 years and 10 months. "I find it hard to work right now with a knife sticking in my back," he said, over a drink at a workers' hangout near the plant. From Seibert and many others here, the bankruptcy filing by Delphi, the nation's largest auto parts maker, represents the end of an era for a 95-year-old company that took its name from this once-thriving industrial city.
