The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services is seeking volunteers for various positions: American Healing Arts Alliance Inc.: This nonprofit alliance of healing arts and science professionals and the general public offers health- and peace-building educational services. Needed are volunteers 18 years of age and older for committees for speaker programs, monthly and other events, fund raising, membership, publicity and marketing. Since 1998, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has taught more than 32,000 students in 1,200 classroom programs about the Chesapeake Bay, coastal and bay marine life, as well as the state's streams through its Teaching Environmental Awareness in Maryland (TEAM) program. DNR officials are looking for volunteers who want to learn about the program and then teach it to children in third through eighth grades in the state. Volunteers must be 18 years old and be able to provide their own transportation.

Baltimore police are planning a mass search Saturday for Phylicia Barnes, the North Carolina teenager and track star missing since a December visit to the city. The new search will involve more than 200 law enforcement officials. Police are also seeking volunteers to help distribute fliers in the Northwest Baltimore neighborhood where Barnes had been staying with her half sister. Anyone interested in helping should call the public affairs unit at 410-396-2012. Anthony Guglielmi, the chief spokesman for the city Police Department, would not identify the precise area to be searched or what is prompting detectives to concentrate there.

The Baltimore branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is asking for volunteers, and particularly men, to help distribute reward fliers on Saturday following a recent string of rapes in the city. "This could be our mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, niece, aunt - you get the message," branch President Marvin L. Cheatham wrote in an e-mail. Truck overturns on I-95; man dies A Cecil County man was killed when his pickup truck overturned near Havre de Grace yesterday morning, closing an Interstate 95 on-ramp for about three hours, state police said. Matthew S. Markle, 38, of Conowingo lost control of his truck about 7 a.m. on the ramp from Route 155 to southbound I-95 at Exit 89, police said. The truck left the roadway, went into a ditch and overturned, trapping Markle, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Get creative at Show House Historic Ellicott City Inc. will present its 24th annual Decorator Show House at Homewood Farm from Sept. 20 to Oct. 19, and is seeking volunteers to help with the event and with preparations for it. Volunteers are needed while the house is being decorated, from late July to early September, and to serve as docents at tours of the fully decorated house. The fundraiser will help pay for the Mill Education Center to be built in the Ellicott City historic district.
