The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services is seeking volunteers for various positions: American Healing Arts Alliance Inc.: This nonprofit alliance of healing arts and science professionals and the general public offers health- and peace-building educational services. The Columbia Archives is seeking volunteers who lived through the Civil Rights Movement to help Howard County students with their Martin Luther King Jr. Day projects. “This project will connect the people who lived through the March on Washington and the Civil Rights Movement - and personally felt the impact - with some of today's teens who have been impacted in a different way,” said Barbara Kellner, director of the Archives, which is part of the Columbia Association.  On Jan. 20, Howard County will join the nation in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day of service.

The Harford County Community Mediation Program is looking for volunteers to join the group. The Community Mediation Program, a program of the Department of Community Services, offers Harford County citizens free mediation services. Residents can take advantage of this confidential and neutral process to resolve conflicts. Mediators help resolve conflicts that include disputes between neighbors, families, friends, businesses and consumers. Volunteer mediators receive 45 hours of free basic mediation training and five hours of follow-up training.

Since 1998, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has taught more than 32,000 students in 1,200 classroom programs about the Chesapeake Bay, coastal and bay marine life, as well as the state's streams through its Teaching Environmental Awareness in Maryland (TEAM) program. DNR officials are looking for volunteers who want to learn about the program and then teach it to children in third through eighth grades in the state. Volunteers must be 18 years old and be able to provide their own transportation.

Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding is conducting a volunteer orientation Oct. 29, from 2:30 p.m. to 5 at Tuckaway Farm in Havre de Grace. Volunteers are needed for various duties such as horse leading, side walking, horse care, facility maintenance and administrative duties. Baltimore police are planning a mass search Saturday for Phylicia Barnes, the North Carolina teenager and track star missing since a December visit to the city. The new search will involve more than 200 law enforcement officials. Police are also seeking volunteers to help distribute fliers in the Northwest Baltimore neighborhood where Barnes had been staying with her half sister. Anyone interested in helping should call the public affairs unit at 410-396-2012. Anthony Guglielmi, the chief spokesman for the city Police Department, would not identify the precise area to be searched or what is prompting detectives to concentrate there.

The Baltimore branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is asking for volunteers, and particularly men, to help distribute reward fliers on Saturday following a recent string of rapes in the city. "This could be our mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, niece, aunt - you get the message," branch President Marvin L. Cheatham wrote in an e-mail. He promoted a $2,000 reward for information leading to an indictment in the rapes. Organizers plan to gather at noon on Saturday at Knox Presbyterian Church at 1300 N. Eden St. - Matthew Hay Brown
