Kyra Sedgwick, Holly Hunter, Angela Lansbury - Baltimore native Jada Pinkett Smith is about to join some pretty exclusive company when her new weekly TV series, HawthoRNe, debuts Tuesday on TNT. Like those other actresses who made their reputations in feature films, she is coming to TV as both star and executive producer of a series designed to showcase her talents. The trade-off is a simple one: The TV network or cable channel gets a film-caliber star who will attract new viewers, and the star gets a steady paycheck and control of the material in which she appears.

How simultaneously wonderful and awful to be a muse! For Andy Warhol's prize protege Edie Sedgwick, it was wonderful for capturing the reckless beauty of her youth. But it was awful when she found she was a muse and nothing but a muse at a time when she needed true friends and people who might draw out her talent as well as her personality. Set largely in "the Factory," the headquarters for Warhol's Pop Art explosion, Factory Girl should be a bummer because it's almost all falling action.

Kyra Sedgwick has her own personal take on the appeal of her hit cable series, The Closer, and it goes dead against the conventional wisdom of character growth as the key to great drama. Sedgwick believes LAPD Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson is such a fan favorite in large part because she shows no real growth, emotional or otherwise - ever. "You know, it's funny, but that's sort of the thing about her, she's really not that changed since the start of the series," says Sedgwick, who also serves as co-executive producer.

Everyone should have a mom like Marie Persichilli. The retired social services worker, who lives in North Carolina, e-mailed and called for help recently after one of her 25-year-old twin daughters, both cadets in training for the Baltimore Police Department, ran into a mess of car problems. After more than a month of tackling the issue on her own as her daughters attended all-day classes at the academy, Persichilli thought she needed an assist. Little did she know, Persichilli was already a force to be reckoned with while sitting at home 450 miles away.
