KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Before taking the floor at Kemper Arena yesterday afternoon, Kansas guard Michael Lee wrote a one-word reminder to himself on both sneakers. Confidence. If Lee ever loses his confidence again, he may think back to this second-round NCAA tournament game, when he scored nine consecutive Kansas points to help the No. 4 seed Jayhawks to a 78-63 victory over No. 12 seed Pacific before a sellout crowd of 17,667. Kansas (23-8) was clinging to a 53-51 lead over Pacific (25-8)

Yerofshefsky led the way with 187 yards on 18 carries. Castor added 164 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns. South Carroll (2-1) couldn't find a way to stop either back - or quarterback Zach Hayes at times - throughout the game.

Seton Keough couldn't figure out what to do against St. Frances forward/center Angel McCoughtry. She wreaked havoc on defense and set up a big part of the Panthers offense. In short, McCoughtry controlled the game. McCoughtry became the fourth player in school history to record a triple double, scoring 13 points with 11 steals and 10 rebounds as top-ranked St. Frances scored the first 16 points of the second half and pulled away for a 60-33 victory over No. 11 Seton Keough in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference game last night.

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Indians did their best to spoil Mike Hargrove's homecoming last night, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to deal their former manager a 6-5 loss. Matt Lawton's two-run homer off Orioles closer Jorge Julio capped the two-out comeback by the Indians, whose four runs in the ninth were all unearned. The Orioles (18-20) received six strong innings from Scott Erickson and another home run by Tony Batista but still had their losing streak extended to three games.

PARK CITY, Utah - Todd Hays didn't let his poor showing in the two-man bobsled competition spoil his run yesterday in the four-man bobsled. The second-ranked Archbishop Spalding boys basketball team outscored host McDonogh 15-5 in the second quarter and pulled away in the second half for a 55-46 Baltimore Catholic League victory last night over the No. 9 Eagles. Down four after the first quarter, the Cavaliers (20-4, 8-2 BCL) switched to a half-court trap that stifled the Eagles (14-8, 5-6), holding them without a field goal in the second quarter. "The half-court trap changed the momentum," said Spalding coach Mike Glick.

Dunbar senior guard Jujuan Robinson earned the nickname "Ice" when he was 9 years old, because a recreation league coach said he was "smooth as ice, and twice as nice." Nine years later, the nickname remains and it is still valid. Robinson came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points, had six assists and made four steals to lead the third-ranked Poets basketball team to a surprisingly easy 92-74 victory over No. 11 Southern-Baltimore in a Baltimore City League game last night at Dunbar.

Junior guard Marche Strickland scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the second half and Maryland used a 15-2 run midway through the half to take control en route to a 65-50 win over Loyola yesterday at Reitz Arena. After a poor-shooting first half that ended with Maryland up 22-14, the Greyhounds' Shontrese Smith scored on a driving layup to tie the game at 31 with just over 13 minutes remaining. The Terps (2-0) answered the Loyola run with a 12-2 surge of their own to take a 46-33 lead on a Deedee Warley basket with eight minutes left.

A small, unassuming three-screen movie theater is transforming itself into an art film house. The Columbia City 3 Cinema seeks to fill a niche for those in Howard County who want quality films but not the trek to Baltimore or Washington to see them. The cinema, which is more than a quarter-century old, changed from blockbuster showings to smaller venue films last month. Despite not being heavily publicized, the switch in format has brought success, the theater's manager said. "Our customers had requested it," said Debra McClellan, whose company, General Cinema Theaters, runs Columbia City 3. "Our attendance has doubled since we changed."
