Tommy Montanye beat his defender on a 20-yard solo run before firing his second goal of the game past keeper Geoff Hebert with six seconds left as visiting, unranked Franklin avenged an earlier loss by dethroning No. 10 Dulaney, 7-6, for the Baltimore County boys lacrosse title last night. Montanye's goal ended a 73-game winning streak against county teams by the defending 4A-3A state champion Lions (12-3) - one that dated to a 10-6 loss against Hereford in May 1999. That defeat also was Dulaney's last setback against a county team on its home field.

Salisbury sophomore Brett Yoder didn't play in last year's one-goal victory over Washington College in the annual Charles B. Clark Cup. In fact, it was the only game he didn't appear in all season. So he decided to make up for it last night. Yoder scored his 10th goal of the season less than five minutes into the game then added his 11th just minutes later to help propel Salisbury to a 13-7 win at M&T Bank Stadium in the schools' 37th men's lacrosse meeting. It was Salisbury's fifth straight win over Washington College (12-3)

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The road remained unkind to the Blast last night. The Blast ended its three-match road trip winless, this time falling to the California Cougars for the first time all season. The Blast could not stop Vicente Figueroa all night, as he scored four goals and lead California to an 8-6 victory before 3,587 at Stockton Arena. It was California's fourth consecutive victory. The Blast had lost its previous two matches in Philadelphia and Milwaukee. Figueroa found gaps in the Blast's defense all match and put the ball in the net virtually every time he had a chance.

"I thought we came out with great intensity and were very smart with the ball," Terps coach Cindy Timchal said. "They then frustrated us a bit with their defense and got on a little bit of a roll and made it tough to come back.

It had been 24 days since the Chicago Blackhawks celebrated a victory, so it mattered little that they blew a three-goal lead.. For the struggling Blackhawks, the two-point jump in the standings made this ugly game seem as pretty as a flawless diamond. Chicago ended its 10-game losing streak last night, getting an overtime goal from Kyle Calder and 34 saves from seldom-used goaltender Adam Munro in a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals at MCI Center. Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who have lost five straight -- all at home.

It took the No. 3 Calvert Hall boys soccer team some time to settle into the 2005 season in its opener at No. 7 Severna Park last night. Just a little while. After yielding an early goal, the Cardinals made sure to take advantage of all opportunities, responding with speed, skill and four straight goals to come away with a 4-2 win. Junior Marco Mangione scored two goals, with Ernest Jackson and Christian Barreiro providing the others, as the Cardinals got the better of the play against a formidable Falcons side in the traditional out-of-league contest.

LANDOVER - Hardly a surprise, D.C. United came to FedEx Field with an extra dose of motivation last night, while its supporters - 31,473 strong and plenty noisy - were both curious and cautiously optimistic. After all, how often comes the chance to see how you compare with one of the world's finest clubs, last night's being Chelsea, the English Premier League champ. United, the defending Major Soccer League champion, had more than its share of moments and put some doubt in Chelsea's 2-1 victory.
