After yesterday's 8-5 triumph over Poly, Western goalie Mya Norfolk wanted to focus on her team's growth over the past few weeks instead of her own. But it was difficult not to notice the turnaround of Norfolk, a junior playing her first season in goal, as the Doves avenged a 15-14 overtime loss last month to the Engineers. After allowing two goals in the opening 90 seconds yesterday, Norfolk was touched for only three over the final 48 minutes. The loss was the first for Poly (3-4 overall, 2-1 league)

City entered yesterday's girls soccer game at Western with an unbeaten league record, including a lopsided victory over a team that defeated the Doves. But Western had one thing the Knights didn't: Star power. Star Tazwell set up Tiffany Brown's opening goal midway through the first half and then, in the second half, scored twice herself, giving Western a 3-1, Baltimore City League victory. The 5-foot-6 sophomore, who has played since she was 4, used speed and skill to expose weaknesses in the Knights' defense as casually as she cracked a bright grin after her second goal.

Salisbury sophomore Brett Yoder didn't play in last year's one-goal victory over Washington College in the annual Charles B. Clark Cup. In fact, it was the only game he didn't appear in all season. So he decided to make up for it last night. Yoder scored his 10th goal of the season less than five minutes into the game then added his 11th just minutes later to help propel Salisbury to a 13-7 win at M&T Bank Stadium in the schools' 37th men's lacrosse meeting. It was Salisbury's fifth straight win over Washington College (12-3)

No. 5 Boys' Latin converted three extra-man opportunities in yesterday's matchup with No. 3 St. Mary's, but it was the one that got away that enabled the homestanding Saints to escape Weems Whalen Field with an 8-7 victory. With St. Mary's defensemen Joe Keenan and Thad Schmidt occupying the penalty box late in the fourth quarter for holding and slashing, respectively, visiting Boys' Latin had what appeared to be a perfect chance at knotting the score. The Lakers did manage to get off five shots in that 90-second span, but four of those found the webbing of Jim Brown's stick.

For much of the game, Fallston did everything but score in its Class 2A region championship game with Towson at Hereford High School last night. There was a first-half goal and one 12 minutes into the second half, but Towson (11-2-1) was still very much in the contest. Then the dam burst and the Cougars (13-0-1) bombarded goalkeeper Jon Vaupel with three goals in 73 seconds en route to a 6-0 victory."We were very positive at halftime, to be within 1-0," Towson coach Randy Dase said. "I'd seen them twice and they are a well-oiled machine."

WASHINGTON - The Washington Capitals avoided being shut out in three straight games for the first time in their history last night, but two goals by Peter Bondra weren't enough to keep them from losing. The Buffalo Sabres used a little bit of luck on St. Patrick's Day and a wonderful performance from backup goalie Martin Biron to win, 3-2, and send the Capitals to their third straight defeat. Biron made 42 saves and the Sabres got the winning goal from Chris Gratton on the power play.
