Pete Sampras will make his Davis Cup debut when the United States meets France in the final, but John McEnroe isn't going to be there.Although the United States has not yet officially named its team for the match at Lyon, France, Nov. 29-Dec. 1, captain Tom Gorman's choices are eighth-ranked Andre Agassi, No. 7 Sampras and the doubles team of Ken Flach and Robert Seguso.The announcement of the team is expected today from United States Tennis Association headquarters in New York. McEnroe, who has played and won more Davis Cup matches than any other American, was bypassed in favor of Sampras, one of the hottest players on the tour.

Within a week of Mayor Edward L. Williar's retirement announcement, two councilmen have filed to run for mayor.Council President Perry L. Jones Jr. and Councilman Scott W. Davis will face each other in the May 14 election. Two council seats also are up for election. Incumbent Councilman Bret Grossnickle has filed so far to keep his seat.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- More than 40demonstrators threw sand and seeds on a court and shouted anti-apartheid slogans, temporarily halting play on opening day of the ATP World Doubles Final.The protesters, most of them black or mixed-race, were arresteafter a brief scuffle with fans and security guards.The protest was organized by the Tennis Association of South Africa, which represents players of mixed race. The group said South Africa has not achieved full racial unity in tennis.On the court, the big news was the upset of second-seeded Scott Davis and David Pate of the United States.

An off-duty Harford County sheriff's deputy was shot late last night while driving near Baltimore's Little Italy neighborhood, police reported.The bullet wound was not serious and the deputy was expected to be released from a hospital today.City police said Deputy Scott Davis, 24, was driving east in the 900 block of E. Pratt St. with a companion around 10:30 p.m. when he saw two men arguing at the corner of Albemarle Street.Deputy Davis later told police he continued on when he heard what sounded like a gunshot.
