COLLEGE PARK -- The Maryland Terrapins have been taking much more than they've been giving this holiday season. Last night -- against overwhelmed Chicago State -- was no exception. To say the No. 18 Terps started quickly simply wouldn't do it justice. They scored the game's first 22 points and needed only 4:30 to do it, getting a game-high 24 points from junior guard Juan Dixon and plenty of balance from the rest on their way to a feel-good, 117-55 win over the visiting Cougars before 13,506 at Cole Field House.

Jim Larranaga's team is not on national television much, and after its last showing, that won't change. Larranaga led George Mason into the Colonial Athletic Association title game against UNC-Wilmington, where 68 points were scored - total. The final score of 35-33 is the second-lowest scoring NCAA men's basketball game since the shot clock was implemented in 1986. It was ugly, but enough to earn the Patriots an invitation to the NCAA tournament, where they will face Maryland on Thursday at the BSU Pavilion in Boise, Idaho.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - If the Orioles can get solid starting pitching, they have a chance to be in the American League pennant race until the end. Or so the conventional thinking behind most baseball midseason prognostications went. As the Orioles' front office continues its quest to find a front-line starter, the Orioles' offense is trying to find its way out of a confounding slump at the worst possible time - when the Orioles badly need a clutch hit and while trying to stay afloat in the AL East race.

Some 25 years ago, Jim MacDonald honed his soccer skills under coach George Wagner at Franklin High. Last night, MacDonald, now the North Carroll girls coach, continued to show his former mentor that he picked up a trick or two. Forward Carly Rihard scored two goals, helping the host Panthers earn a 3-3 tie with No. 8 Franklin, a Class 3A state finalist a year ago, in a stiff early season test for both teams. North Carroll (0-0-1) led 3-2 before the Indians" Ashley Harris won a ball about 10 yards in front of the goal and beat keeper Jenna Trumpower to her left to tie the game with 16:32 left.

Richard Jefferson scored 32 points and rookie Luc Richard Mbah a Moute added 17, making up for a missed chance in regulation and rallying the Milwaukee Bucks to a 112-104 overtime victory over the visiting Washington Wizards last night. Mbah a Moute, a second-round draft pick, missed a shot that would have won it at the buzzer after Milwaukee overcame a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit. But in overtime, Mbah a Moute drove for a layup, then grabbed a rebound when Antawn Jamison missed a short shot and hit a 12-footer with 37 seconds left to give Milwaukee a 108-102 lead.
