DURHAM, N.C. - Loyola may have awakened a sleeping giant in lacrosse Friday night. Unranked Duke exploded for five fourth-quarter goals and held on to beat No. 4 Loyola, 9-8, at Koskinen Stadium. Duke (3-4) broke the game's final tie with two goals in a 55-second burst from Josh Offit and Christian Walsh to go up 8-6 with 8:45 remaining. Although Loyola (4-2) twice cut the deficit to one, on goals by Pat Laconi and Justin Ward, the latter coming with 1:13 left, the Greyhounds couldn't get the equalizer.

Memories of two bad losses last season to Dulaney, and a berth in the Baltimore County championship game, were motivators for Catonsville senior Rachel Schwaab in the Comets' 16-7 win Thursday night. "I think we were psyched because the counties were at stake, but, because we lost to Dulaney twice last year (including the county championship) and got blown out twice, that was a huge factor," said Schwaab, who collected two goals and two assists. Schwaab's biggest play came with the Comets (13-1)

Catonsville came into Saturday's Baltimore County Championship game against Dulaney with a simple strategy. The Comets wanted to keep the ball away from the potent Lions, and that plan worked — for the opening minutes. No. 14 Dulaney took command midway through the first half, however, and rolled to a 16-6 victory over Catonsville at Franklin. Dulaney (12-2-1), which was led by Kara Burke's seven goals and one assist, won its first county title in three years. This also was its second 10-goal victory over Catonsville (7-7)

Eric Lusby missed nearly all of last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Loyola's final game of 2010. He tried to play in the first two games but stopped because the knee didn't feel right. Lusby felt much better in Saturday's 2012 season opener. He scored a career-high four goals to help Loyola rally from an early three-goal deficit and defeat No. 16 Delaware, 13-8, at the Ridley Athletic Complex. "It feels great just to be back and to be this productive," Lusby said.

CHICAGO -- When Michel Goulet dreamed as a boy of scoring a lights-out goal in the NHL playoffs, this wasn't exactly what he had in mind. His imagination had him floating down left wing, then suddenly flicking his stick like a whip. The puck would travel too fast and fluid for the goalie to reach with pad, glove or stick and bury itself in the net's twine. But reality was much different last night at Chicago Stadium in the Chicago Blackhawks' 4-2 victory over Edmonton. Goulet dragged 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenseman Craig Muni on his back like a grand piano as he skated netward.
