Less than three weeks ago, Andrew Spinnenweber struck out 13 Sherwood batters and carried Chesapeake-AA to a Class 4A state championship. It was the best moment of his life. Now, Spinnenweber, who will pitch at a preparatory school in New Mexico next year, can add another accolade to a steadily growing list: he was one of 30 players selected to play in the Brooks Robinson Senior High School All-Star Game this Sunday at Camden Yards. "It's going to be a lot of fun," Spinnenweber said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Calvert Hall fans should like this note that was sent in by one of The Sun's high school writers, Todd Karpovich. Growing up, Terrence Turner-Blair wasn't like the other kids. While others wanted to be the next Kobe Bryant or Peyton Manning, he wanted to be the next Barry Bonds or Ken Griffey Jr. At this weekend's Big 26 Baseball Classic in Harrisburg, Pa., Turner-Blair again won't be like the other kids. Sure, the 52 high school baseball players from Maryland and Pennsylvania taking the field for the three-game series are all pursuing baseball careers. But Turner-Blair (Northwestern) is the only participant from Baltimore.

When the Major League Baseball season starts March 31, Brett Harman won't be on a pitcher's mound. The late, great Bill Veeck, former major-league owner and Eastern Shore resident, once said, "That's the true harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball."Yes, it's that time of year and while many across our nation suffer without major-league baseball, we in Anne Arundel County can feel privileged to have a quality high school baseball program as an escape.Who needs those prima donnas when we have young kids who play for the love of the game?

Ahigh school baseball or softball coach has more than enough to worry about in the course of a season, from keeping his pitchers sharp to making sure the aluminum bats ping, without having to be concerned about the condition of the field. And last year, many of the city's public school baseball and softball fields had as many dandelions and trash wrappers on them as they had base hits scattering through them. But, thanks to an infusion of cash and an effort by the school system to make things right, softball and baseball players in the city are playing on the best-conditioned fields they've ever played on. "It's the first year in a long time that we've gotten every game, or that almost every program has gotten in a majority of its games," said Digital Harbor baseball coach Chris Vaccaro.

Maybe it's that I'm getting older (we're all getting older, I know that), but the high school baseball and softball seasons really breezed by this year. In another few weeks, there won't be any high school sports until the fall, and I'll have but one team to worry about, the IronBirds. Thinking about the Aberdeen men turning in a campaign like last year's is enough to make any journalist blue (try interviewing a manager and players who just lost their 12th straight game), so I'm going to focus on the positive, the upcoming MPSSAA regional tournaments.
