The college in tiny St. Mary's City has changed a lot since Martha Myers Yeager was a student there in the early 1940s. Back then, it was the St. Mary's Female Seminary Junior College and consisted of a few buildings; now it's St. Mary's College of Maryland, a much larger coeducational public four-year college that is among the most selective in the state. But one thing hasn't changed, Yeager says. It's still a good place for a city-raised student to go to college, as she did when she left Baltimore to attend St. Mary's more than 60 years ago. That is why, Yeager said, she is giving St. Mary's College of Maryland $100,000 to create a scholarship fund in her late husband's name to help Baltimore students attend the school.

Rosa Pryor wanted to make a difference.A decade ago, after having several heart attacks and leaving the work she loved, "I felt that there was something missing," says Pryor, whom many know as "Rambling Rose," the byline for her weekly entertainment column in the Baltimore Afro-American.The thing is, the former singer, promoter and manager wasn't a rich woman. After a divorce, she'd worked hard to raise four kids. All she had was a passion for music and a desire to help her community. In her small, West Baltimore apartment, where the walls are filled with certificates of appreciation, Pryor, now 54, recalls that a friend suggested she start a scholarship fund.

The 23rd annual Grand Prix, which is open to the public, will take place Saturday at Marama Farm, a 100-acre spread in Clarksville purchased by longtime supporters George and Marilyn Doetsch just months before college officials went looking for a new venue.
