Charles B. Reeves Jr., a retired Baltimore attorney, called the other day to chat a bit about the President Warfield, an Old Bay Line steamer that I had mentioned in an obituary for Henry "Sonny" Schloss. Schloss and his father, Moses M. "Captain Mo" Schloss, a Baltimore Zionist and businessman, had joined the secret effort after World War II to purchase the old overnight packet boat that had sailed regularly between Baltimore and Norfolk, Va., before being requisitioned during the war and sent to England.

Henry "Sonny" Schloss, president of a Southwest Baltimore manufacturing plant who was prominent in Baltimore Zionist circles and assisted in the refitting of the ship that became the doomed Exodus in 1947, died July 1 of complications from Alzheimer's disease at the Arden Courts assisted-living facility in Pikesville. The longtime Pikesville resident was 86. Mr. Schloss, who was born in Baltimore and raised in the 2200 block of E. Baltimore St. near Patterson Park, attended city public schools.

Emanuel M. Schloss, a retired sales manager and former Baltimore resident, died of complications of a stroke Sunday at his home in Palm Beach, Fla. He was 91. Mr. Schloss was born and raised in Washington. He was a 1931 graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. During his nearly 60-year business career, Mr. Schloss worked in the jewelry and men's clothing businesses. He had lived in Baltimore from 1955 to 1968, when he moved to New York City. Since his 1990 retirement, he lived in Palm Beach.

Shearwater Sailing Club's annual St. Brendan Cup Regatta last weekend drew 67 teams for a single contest on Saturday, sailing in eight PHRF splits and one-design starts for Catalina 27s and Tritons, followed on Sunday by a two-race series for 24 MORC and J/30 crews.Saturday's bigger boats in PHRF A-0, A-1, A-2, B and the new Sport class sailed a 19.3-mile course, while their smaller counterparts in PHRF C, D and Nonspinnaker and the one-design classes contended on a 12.9-mile version. It was a wet, cold day as steady rain drenched the fleet and winds were unpredictable.

Bob Beaumont had been teaching tennis for several years before coming to the Baltimore Tennis and Fitness Center in Pikesville to work for tennis guru Lenny Schloss. "My method produced hit-and-miss results," Beaumont said. "I had researched tennis and read instructional guides and hints in Tennis magazine. But when I came here, I found Lenny's program really cut through a lot of the mental static in my own game, as well as in the games of my students. I got rid of the mental interference and I found I could translate that to the people I was teaching."
