When Neil Saval and his wife closed on a single-family home in Federal Hill, his first purchase wasn't a piece of contemporary art or a plush sofa - it was a Panasonic 60-inch flat-screen television. "The day I settled on the house, the installers were delivering the new TV," the 29-year-old system engineer said. "My wife jokes with me that before we had any furniture, we had to get the TV. GROWING UP IN an Irish-American home, I ate a fair amount of corned beef. It was another form of brisket, one of our favorite Sunday dinners.I am not sure how my family became a clan of brisket eaters, instead of salmon lovers. My maternal grandmother, who was born in Ireland and lived with my family when I was a boy, seemed to prefer fresh fish as the entree of choice when "company" -- distant relatives or acquaintances from Ireland -- would visit our house for dinner.Once I tagged along with my grandmother when she went to the local fish market.

Fashion is certainly the passion with Baltimore's social set these days. Fashion-themed fundraisers have been popping up all over. Among the latest, the first-ever VIP shindig last weekend prior to Maryland Institute College of Art's annual Student Fashion Show. Just add a thing or two and voila! soup's upOld Bay, the seasoning that is pretty much synonymous with Maryland, is the star ingredient in two new soup mixes. You just add crab, water and tomatoes to the mix for the Maryland crab soup, and you add crab and milk for the cream of crab soup. The mixes can also be used as the base for other dishes, including dips. They're available at Safeway and Metro supermarkets and retail for about $2 a package.
