25 Years Ago (Week of June 15-21, 1969):* Two grants were provided by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation of the Department of the Interior for the development of neighborhood parks in the county: $3,862.50, which would be matched by the county, was designated for developing a softball field and installing playground equipment at Elkridge Elementary School, and $3,347.50, also to be matched by the county, would provide playground equipment at the Savage Park site.* Dr. Alfred J. Smith, president of Howard County Community College, spoke at ground-breaking ceremonies for the college's first building.

A 53-year-old Baltimore man faces attempted murder charges in an attack on two women in North Laurel, Howard County police said yesterday. Acting on a tip, police arrested Raymond Watson under a bridge near Stevens Forest Road and Woodside Court in Columbia about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police said. Watson was being sought in the knife attack Friday night on two women in front of their home. According to police, a 44-year-old woman who once had a relationship with Watson emerged from the house to find a man she identified as the suspect hiding in the bushes.

The property was valued at more than $2,000.* North Laurel: 9300 block of Cross Timbers: Someone stole a rear hatchback deck cover from a red 1990 Ford Escort Monday.9200 block of Traders Crossing: The driver side window of a Nissan Sentra was broken Tuesday, but police said no entry was made.

An armed man robbed a North Laurel liquor store Monday night, Howard County police said.The cashier at the Island Liquors store was not injured in the 11:40 p.m. robbery, police said.The gunman entered the store in the 10000 block of Washington Blvd. and demanded money, police said.After the cashier complied, the robber ran to a dark-colored car that appeared to be late 1970s or early 1980s model Chevrolet Camaro and drove away, police said.The robber was described as black, about 5 feet 9 inches, 155 pounds, with short hair and brown eyes.
