The Savage U-8 travel baseball team is holding practices for players interested in trying out for the 2012 squad. Practices are Tuesdays, from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at Savage Park field 4. Contact Andrew Perlin at andrewjperlin@gmail.com prior to attending practice.

Tryouts for a fall U-10 and spring/summer 2012 U-11 Savage travel baseball team will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sundays, Aug. 14 and 21. All tryouts are 4 p.m. at Savage Park. The team plans to play in MABA spring league and multiple tournaments, including one or more Ripken tournaments (potentially Myrtle Beach for the second year). Not a lot has changed in the jockey goggle business since 1947, when Israel Kroop first stitched trim around a molded sheet of plastic, added two brass vents from a mattress, and attached a strip of elastic. Kroop's design — a made-in-Maryland variation on miners' protective eyewear — was an instant hit with jockeys at the Laurel racetrack and at Pimlico. It didn't take long for the invention to catch on outside Maryland. Riders around the country swapped cumbersome motorcycle goggles for the wafer-thin, well-ventilated models.

A 21-year-old Hyattsville man was seriously injured when he dived into 2-foot deep water from rocks in Savage Park Sunday, Howard County fire and rescue officials said.Eric Carmona of the 5900 block of Norbrook Road was listed in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.Mr. Carmona suffered head and spinal cord injuries, said Lt. Ken Byerly, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.According to rescue officials, Mr. Carmona was with friends at the popular outdoor swim area near the 8600 block of Foundry St. in Savage about 5 p.m. when he made his jump.

'Skunks and Cabbages' walk scheduled March 9Eva Sunell will lead a "Skunks and Cabbages" walk from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 at Savage Park.The walk, for children 3 and older and their parents, will search for signs of spring.
