A man arrested Sunday after barricading himself in a motel room in Timonium has been charged in five bank robberies and a convenience store holdup, Baltimore County police said yesterday.Alan P. Malstrom, 32, of the 2700 block of Glendale Road in the Hillendale area was initially charged with the Nov. 20 robbery of the First National Bank branch in the 7900 block of Harford Road.Based on interviews with Malstrom and with witnesses, police charged Malstrom in the Oct. 5 holdup of a High's store in the 8700 block of Satyr Hill Road.

Cromwell Valley was serene -- even majestic -- under a warm fall sun a few days ago, and Baltimore County officials say it's pretty much going to stay that way.Except for the occasional clatter of bulldozers in a new housing development on a hill above Good Fellowship Farm, and the screeching of a red-tail hawk angry with the intrusion, the meadows and woods were quiet, and county officials think they can keep them so."We want to maintain the integrity of the valley and its natural beauty while still making it available to everyone who wants to use it," said Wayne Harman, director of the county Recreation and Parks Department.

Richard Harold Goodwin Sr., a retired deputy United States marshal, died of a heart attack Sunday at his Anneslie home. He was 75. Born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., he dropped out of high school and worked at racetracks as a hot walker - cooling down horses after runs - and a shoeshine boy. At 17, he left home and joined the Navy. He served for four years before enlisting in the Air Force. He volunteered to go to Vietnam in 1965 in the military police. He moved to Baltimore in 1966. After retiring from the military, he joined Washington Police Department and later became a deputy United States marshal.

BALTIMORE CITY* ROBBERY/ARREST: Northwestern District -- A 58-year-old resident of the 800 block of Staffordshire Road, Cockeysville, was in the 5200 block of Park Heights Ave. Monday afternoon when a gunman robbed him of $104. Officer Greg Eads Jr., who was patrolling the area looking for the gunman, arrested a suspect and found $104 on his person.* ROBBERY: Northwestern District -- A resident of the 2400 block of Pickering Drive was walking to her job in the 3900 block of Reisterstown Road Tuesday morning when a man with a knife robbed her of a watch, two gold rings and her purse containing credit cards, $100, a checkbook and an ATM card.

BALTIMORE WESTERN SHOOTING // A 24-year-old man was leaving a store in the 1800 block of Presstman St. about 10 p.m. Wednesday when someone fired a shot that struck him in the right leg. The victim was treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and he refused to cooperate with police. ARREST // Dominick Brandon was arrested yesterday at his home in the 1100 block of Ashburton St. by members of the Regional Warrant Apprehension Task Force on a warrant charging him with attempted murder.

GARY, Ind. -- Frank "The Chief" Colbert, 69, has done it again.On Friday, in the Gary courtroom of Lake Superior Court, Mr. Colbert got a divorce for the 27th time. That ties a monogamous world record, according to the 1993 "Guinness Book of World Records.""I'm losing track," Mr. Colbert confessed."I've spent $10,000 on psychiatrists trying to figure out why," Mr. Colbert said while snacking later on tortilla chips in his trailer home and contemplating his life. "I guess I just don't like living alone."

Helen Frances Wicklein, who had been co-owner of an aquatic garden business and a lay leader in the United Methodist Church, died Saturday of complications from Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She was 85 and lived in Baynesville. Until ill health forced her retirement about five years ago, she was co-owner of Wicklein's Aquatic Farm and Nursery on Cromwell Bridge Road in Baltimore County. She grew water lilies and other plants, raised goldfish and tended greenhouses.
