Receipts, old photos, marriage licenses, an autopsy report, a death certificate -- files and files of documents dominate the bookshelf in a corner of Nadine Cohodas' Washington office. And more stuffed folders are neatly stacked on the floor. "This, all this is Dinah," the author says, gesturing to the shelf. She's talking about the subject of her latest book, a 559-page project that took a "shade under four years" to complete. Queen: The Life and Music of Dinah Washington, Cohodas' fourth book, hit stores Tuesday.

Billy Wilder said that what Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe had was "that strange trick of flesh impact - that is to say, their flesh registered for the camera and came across on the screen as real flesh that you could touch." In Barbershop 2: Back in Business, director Kevin Rodney Sullivan finds that same "flesh impact" in the new gal on the block, Queen Latifah, and the returning cast (female and male) of the 2002 hit about a South Side, Chicago barbershop. He guides them with such intimate assurance that they envelop audiences in the warmth of a small, tight-knit and joyous body politic.

Most sailors can only imagine their dream boat. Annapolis advertising executive George Sass has just taken delivery of his. It is the product of his years on both sail and power boats, designed in Annapolis, built in Edgewater, and now berthed at the end of his yard on Spa Creek. Delivered June 30, it is being readied for the family's annual cruise to New England. At 43 feet, it is the latest model in the Thomas Point series off the drawing board of local naval architect Mike Kaufman, who worked closely with Sass to enable the new owner to have the some of the joys of a sailboat with the speed and comforts of a cruiser.

County officials, concerned about protecting historic buildings such as the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, are considering new technology to safeguard wooden structures from fire. In the past few weeks, several have seen demonstrations of fire retardants that can be applied directly to interior and exterior wood. Some of the products have been used in other counties to protect historic structures from arson. Arson has been a factor in several Carroll County barn fires, and Frederick lost one of its historic bridges to vandalism.

It began as a joke. A possibility so far-fetched the Wagner family laughed at the idea, then cheekily slapped it onto their menus.Which was how Mikie's, a local diner-style restaurant that opened late in the summer of 1997 in Glen Burnie, came to have "Now on the East Coast" and "The newest location on our East Coast Tour" plastered all over its menus."

I've loved Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate" since I was a child and would sit for hours in front of my dad's old stereo wearing out the grooves to repeat songs such as "So in Love," "Too Darn Hot," "Another Op'nin', Another Show" and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare."This play-within-a-play musical about love and dysfunction within a troupe of actors mounting Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" is one of Porter's masterpieces. Most of the work's sassy color and vivacious wit is on display at the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre's production of "Kiss Me Kate," which plays Thursday through Sunday evenings through Sept.
