COLLEGE PARK - The Maryland men's soccer team could sense a breakout was at hand. The Terrapins had put too much pressure on Hofstra throughout a scoreless first half. Early in the second half of last night's NCAA tournament second-round game, the Terps suddenly made their shots count, and the Pride was done. Using its superiority in speed and skill, third-seeded Maryland scored three goals during a four-minute span, including the first two by senior midfielder Domenic Mediate, and rolled to a 4-0 victory before 1,085 at Ludwig Field.

Taylor Twellman, Maryland's leading men's soccer scorer last fall and a third-team All-American, has opted to play professionally in Germany, forgoing his final two seasons of eligibility at College Park. The university announced yesterday that Twellman, 20, has signed with 1860 Munich, one of two pro teams from that city in the Bundesliga, Germany's top professional league. 1860 Munich is the older of the two and has a strong local following; Bayern Munich is more widely known, though, and more successful internationally.

Talented junior attacker Domenic Mediate is already out with a broken collarbone. And now junior forward Abe Thompson could be joining him on the sideline today with a foot injury. The injuries couldn't have come at a worse time for second-seeded Maryland (18-2-1), which continues its bid for a return trip to NCAA soccer's final four when it meets 15th-seeded Akron (15-4-2) in a round-of-16 game today at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field in College Park. "This is just a major challenge we have to overcome," said Terps coach Sasho Cirovski yesterday after a tuneup for the Zips.

COLLEGE PARK - Regulation wasn't enough. Nor were two overtimes. To reach the NCAA men's soccer quarterfinals, Maryland needed penalty kicks. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the third-seeded Terps converted five penalty kicks to defeat 14th-seeded Creighton at Ludwig Field. The Terps (16-5-2) have now reached the final eight for the third straight season and will host St. John's on Saturday with a chance at their third consecutive College Cup.
