The brains of the U.S. women's soccer team has Maryland ties, a blue-collar past and a Ripkenesque fervor to win. Meet April Heinrichs, Olympic coach, who'll guide the women's squad today in a pre-Games game against Russia at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis (Ch. 2, 2 p.m.). Having coached five years at the University of Maryland and the last four at Virginia, Heinrichs won the Olympic post last winter. Publicly, she vowed to work overtime to take America over the top next month when it goes Down Under.

Abby Bausman and Emmy Harbo scored first-half goals to power No. 7 Maryland past visiting No. 13 James Madison, 2-0, in a women's college soccer match last night.Bausman (Dulaney) notched her first career goal off an assist from Michelle Deville at the 13: 22 mark before Harbo added the insurance goal, assisted by Keri Sarver, at 37: 31.Maryland, which improved to 2-0 with the victory, outshot James Madison, 12-4. Columbia residents told state Public Service Commission representatives last week that they want the telephone company to leave their numbers alone.The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. told 126 residents in the Kendall Ridge neighborhood in the village of Long Reach that it would be changing their numbers to an Ellicott City exchange.Being assigned new numbers is not just an inconvenience, residents told the commission Thursday night; it will be a financial hardship.Those who want to keep their Columbia numbers say they have a Washington-area orientation.

Loved ones had always been struck by the similarities between the Naval Academy roommates — both family men, both rugged athletes, both warriors who yearned to reach the heart of action. Now, they needed to be together again. Christina Gochnour, daughter of John and Jean Gochnour, of Pasadena, Maryland, wed Daniel Stover, son of Jeff and Barbara Stover, of Sarver, Pennsylvania, on April 4, 2009. The couple was wed in an outdoor ceremony at the MGM Grand Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The wedding reception was also held at the MGM Grand Resort. The wedding party consisted of Maid of Honor, Amanda Hoffman, friend of the Bride, and Best Man, Bill Kress, friend of the Groom. The couple remained in Las Vegas for their honeymoon.

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Jennifer Crawford's goal from 10 yards midway through the second half proved to be the game winner as No. 3 seed Clemson defeated No. 6 Maryland, 2-1, yesterday in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Coast Conference soccer tournament.Crawford's goal, her 13th of the season, came at 65: 51 and pushed the Tigers' lead to 2-0. Clemson (14-5-1) opened the scoring in the 38th minute on a header by Lissa Mansberry off a direct kick.Keri Sarver scored the only goal for the Terps (17-4-1)
