Distinctive Trick and jockey Jozbin Santana, racing in last place down the backstretch, waited for a spot to open along the rail and then blew past the field and drew off to an easy victory in yesterday's feature at Laurel Park, the $85,000 Sonny Hine Stakes for 3-year-olds. The dark bay son of Distinctive Pro was the longest shot on the board and paid $38.60. He won by seven lengths over Favalora, another long shot who led the field into the stretch before being overwhelmed by the winner.

The Orioles' clubhouse was eerily silent on Tuesday night, a residual effect of losing a late lead to the Minnesota Twins, two starting outfielders to the disabled list and another game off their American League East lead. But about 20 hours later in the aftermath of a 7-4 victory over the Twins at Camden Yards yesterday, the scene was entirely different. Shortstop Miguel Tejada, the clubhouse's official DJ, turned up the Latin music after reliever Steve Reed chastised him for turning it down.

The best young left-handed starter in baseball almost wasn't. The Minnesota Twins' Johan Santana didn't earn a full-time rotation spot until last year. He didn't concentrate on pitching until he was 16. He didn't even know he was a left-hander until he was 11. The blame for that one, anyway, can be attributed to economics. Santana, the 2004 Cy Young Award winner, who starts this afternoon against the Orioles at Camden Yards, was right-handed by necessity. Growing up in a small mountainous town in Venezuela, Santana got his first taste of the sport watching his father play shortstop on local baseball and softball teams.

Sometimes, the best horse isn't the one from New York. Sometimes, the best horse is stabled right here in Maryland. Yesterday, Prideland traveled south from Belmont Park, seduced the bettors and went off at even money in the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes at Pimlico. Meanwhile, trainer Richard W. "Dickie" Small, a fixture on the Pimlico backstretch, marched Legal Control from his barn to the paddock, and the bettors hardly noticed. Legal Control went off at 7-1. When the horses charged to the wire in the year-end stakes for 2-year-old Maryland-breds, however, Legal Control led the procession, and Prideland settled for third.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana took a look around Venezuela and realized the significance of his accomplishment. A nation in political turmoil had people dancing in the streets. Santana, 25, became the first Venezuelan to win the Cy Young Award yesterday, as voters made him a unanimous selection for the American League honor, recognizing a season in which he won AL Pitcher of the Month honors for July, August and September. Santana finished 20-6 and led the league in ERA (2.61)

NEW YORK - The New York Yankees started another postseason the way they finished the last one: unable to get a clutch hit and frustrated by the hottest pitcher in the game. The Minnesota Twins' Johan Santana stepped on the diamond that Josh Beckett called his own last Oct. 25 and accomplished a similar feat, shutting out the Yankees, 2-0, in Game 1 of the American League Division Series before 55,749 at Yankee Stadium last night. The Twins send Brad Radke against Jon Lieber in Game 2 tonight.
