James Santana left New York a decade ago, but much of his hometown is ingrained in him. It is not only in his accent but also in his upfront personality. A former telephone repair technician who jokes that the closest he came to police work in his previous life was "fixing their phones on Rikers Island," Santana was recently hired by the Howard County Police Department as the agency's first Spanish- speaking civilian interpreter. "There's definitely a need," Santana, 58, said one recent afternoon, sitting in a conference room at police headquarters in Ellicott City.

"American Me" is an Hispanic-American's Horatio Alger story: how a smart young man rises in the world. Unfortunately, the world he choses to rise in is the underworld, and the source of his anger, the fuel for his fury, the font of his savagery, is racism. The movie works out an explicit chain of consequences, representing racism as rape. In the zoot suit riots of 1943 in Los Angeles, a young Mexican woman is raped by a gang of white sailors; the child born of this union is, ipso facto, rejected by his father and develops pathologically as a result.

Befuddled birds Changing teams and leagues didn't make Johan Santana any less imposing to the Orioles. The two-time Cy Young Award winner tossed six scoreless innings last night, scattering five hits, walking one and striking out seven. He fanned Luke Scott three times, twice looking, and catcher Guillermo Quiroz twice. Santana threw 87 pitches and left to a loud ovation after retiring Jay Payton to end the sixth and strand Aubrey Huff. Huff and Scott Moore singled twice against Santana, who held on to a 2-0 lead, and Luis Hernandez doubled.

American MeMCA Universal Home Video This is a brutal, graphic film that unflinchingly explores organized crime and gangs in the Los Angeles barrio. It is an impressive directorial debut from Edward James Olmos, previously best known as an Oscar nominee for his work in "Stand and Deliver." Mr. Olmos, who emerged recently as one of the few, true community leaders in the wake of the L.A. riots, is an actor and a Mexican American with something to say.The message delivered here is by no means upbeat: Change must start with the people themselves.
