Isabel Sanford, 86, who won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Louise "Weezie" Jefferson, the stoically beleaguered better half to Sherman Hemsley's reactionary in All in the Family and The Jeffersons, died Friday in Los Angeles. Ms. Sanford's health had declined since she had preventive surgery on a carotid artery 10 months ago. At an age when many actresses would have called it quits, Ms. Sanford made her feature film debut in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? in 1967 after having caught the eye of its director, Stanley Kramer, in the 1965 Broadway production of James Baldwin's Amen Corner.

College presidents typically greet their keynote commencement speakers with a handshake and then sit down. But yesterday at Goucher College, President Sanford J. Unger didn't yield when Maurice Sendak approached the podium. Instead, Unger launched into an interview of the famed children's author - something the former National Public Radio host had first done nearly 22 years ago. "What we talked about has resonated with me ever since, which is the importance in life - the importance for children, in particular - to learn how to be afraid," Unger said.

At a ceremony stocked with political notables and shadowed by the war on terrorism, journalist Sanford J. Ungar formally took the helm of Goucher College yesterday, saying he looked forward to leading the school in a time of crisis. "It feels just wonderful," said Ungar, 55, as he headed into his inauguration at Kraushaar Auditorium, two months into his first semester as president. "This is the best place I've ever worked." Ungar, a native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and a graduate of Harvard University, arrives at the 2,000-student private college after a journalism career that included being a co-host of "All Things Considered" at National Public Radio and contributing to The Washington Post.
