Don't expect Mary Sanford Williams at the Baltimore City Community College commencement exercises today. She might be the college's oldest graduate, but the 80-year-old has things to do. There are summer school classes, reading she needs to do and cleaning in her three-floor Baltimore home. Besides, she doesn't have the energy for an all-day affair. "Well, you know, I'm 80 years old," says the West Baltimore resident. "When you get to be 80, there's only so much you can do. Besides, I'm in summer school already, so I'm busy."

When Cory Sanford saw the old stone tavern last fall, he knew it was the place he'd been looking for and planned to make it his home. But there was no tavern in Taneytown to have a celebratory drink to his purchase of the city's oldest building. That's why the 1760 building will again be the Old Stone Tavern, Sanford said last week, standing amid walls and floors stripped to their original beams and stone. "I had visited German taverns. I loved how they were constructed, and I found this little building in Taneytown.

Joe Sanford's ride ended yesterday as visiting Thomas Johnson of Frederick ripped Sanford and Southwestern, 17-0, in the Class 4A North regional quarterfinals. Sanford rolled through Baltimore City play, throwing three no-hitters to tie the state single-season record, but he was rocked for 16 hits and the Sabers (11-4) were no-hit yesterday by three Patriots pitchers. "You can see the kind of schedule we play as opposed to what they play," Thomas Johnson coach Jim Foit said. The Patriots (11-10)

THE LIST of people that Joe Sanford is surprising is long for now, but growing shorter. Funny what the effect of throwing three no-hitters in a season can have on your anonymity. All of a sudden, people who didn't know the Southwestern senior existed are taking notice of Sanford, even if they don't exactly know who he is. Sanford's coach, Terry Leverette, says his pitcher is still able to walk the halls of Southwestern without anyone really connecting his face to his identity as a star pitcher.

Southwestern senior Joe Sanford pitched a five-inning perfect game yesterday as the Sabers (10-3) routed host Reginald Lewis, 24-0. It was Sanford's third no-hitter of the season, tying a state record set by Towson's Andre Gardner in 2000. Earlier in the season, Sanford (8-0) also pitched no-hit ball in a game that ended after three innings because the opponent forfeited. Yesterday, Sanford struck out 14 of the 15 batters he faced, getting a pop-up for the other out. It was the first perfect game thrown by a city pitcher since Dustin Jones accomplished the feat for Poly in 1995.
