Sanford J. Ungar, the president of Goucher College, plans to resign next summer after 13 years at the head of the Towson school, according to a letter circulated to faculty, staff and students Friday. The letter, addressed to board of trustees chairwoman Norma Lynn Fox, offered no reason for Ungar's decision but noted the "many political, financial, and curricular challenges" liberal arts colleges are facing. "I believe Goucher is well-positioned to deal with these issues, but I also feel it is time for the college to seek a new leader who can bring his or her own experience and perspective to bear and move this remarkable institution forward," Ungar wrote.

Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has been elected to the House (or at least that's where we hear he's going). Welcome to your trends report for Monday, May 8, 2013. Sanford will head to Capitol Hill after facing off against Elizabeth Colbert Busch, sister of the late-night satirist Stephen Colbert. Republicans will hold 233 of the House's 435 seats when Sanford is sworn in, probably this week. Another trip to the House comes today, when former diplomat Gregory Hicks is scheduled to testify about the Benghazi attacks last year.

Say what you will about the controversies the Baltimore Police Department has found itself embroiled in over the years, but we can say definitely that they're not involved in the Trayvon Martin case. That's the Sanford Police Department, outside Orlando, Fla. battling a national firestorm of criticism over its handling of the fatal shooting of the unarmed teen by a neighborhood watch captain.  But in a segment on Comedy Central's Daily Show last night, an image of a city police car somehow found its way into the background of a graphic that read "SANFORD POLICE.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina lawmakers voted down a measure to impeach Gov. Mark Sanford on Wednesday, but recommended a formal rebuke that said his travels and trysts with an Argentine mistress brought the state "ridicule, dishonor, disgrace, and shame not only upon Governor Sanford but upon this state and its citizens." Most of the seven legislative panel members said the Republican should resign, though his affair, use of state planes and a 2008 taxpayer-funded trip to Argentina were not serious misconduct that merited removal from office.

An Annapolis man on Thursday received the maximum sentence, three years, for the killing of his girlfriend's puppy, which Anne Arundel County prosecutors said was part of a two-year pattern of domestic violence. The sentence was what prosecutors sought for what they called one of most gruesome attacks on a pet coupled with domestic abuse - a combination that experts say is common. Donte W. McCreary, 20, killed the 3-month-old terrier in front of his girlfriend because she cared more for it than for him, the prosecutor said.

We thought we'd found true love. Not airport bathroom love. Not high-priced, call-girl love. Not congressional intern boy love. Real love. The kind of love that causes kings to abdicate thrones. "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love." That kind of love. The kind of passionate love women dream about even as they settle for accommodating love. The kind of love that comes with dreamy missives that talk of lightning strikes and soul mates and wind-swept dance floors under the moon.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's bizarre disappearance and sudden re-emergence last week to confess an extramarital affair is cause for liberals and Democrats to rejoice, but not for the typically narrow, partisan motive that there's good news to be found in bad news for the other guys. Sure, there is the satisfying schadenfreude that comes from seeing yet another social conservative fall far short privately of the moral standards he set publicly for others. The list of prominent Republicans bitten by the sexual serpent is big and growing, including as it does former Speaker Newt Gingrich, former almost-Speaker Bob Livingston, airport toe-tapping former Sen. Larry Craig, and page-pestering former Rep. Mark Foley.
