Angels: Batting instructor Rod Carew, whose 18-year-old daughter, Michelle, died of leukemia April 17, will return to the California Angels for tomorrow night's game against Minnesota at Anaheim Stadium, a team spokesman said. . . . Phil Leftwich replaced pitcher Scott Sanderson on the roster. Sanderson was put on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25 with a strained right groin. . . . Pitcher Steve Ontiveros played catch over the weekend for the first time since going on the 60-day disabled list April 5 because of elbow problems.

After more than two weeks without a proper shower, Mike Sanderson felt the welcoming spray he has come to expect over the five months of the around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race: mist from a massive bottle of champagne. Sanderson, the skipper of ABN Amro One, steered his boat across the finish line at Baltimore Light in Chesapeake Bay at 2:57 p.m. yesterday, completing the nearly 5,000-mile run from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that began April 2. The elapsed time was 15 days, 2 hours, 47 minutes and 52 seconds.

The Orioles are expected to announce today the list of non-roster players they will invite to spring training, and there still is the possibility that veteran left-hander Mike Flanagan will be on it.General manager Roland Hemond confirmed that the non-roster invitees would be announced today, but he said the Flanagan situation was still "up in the air."Flanagan, who was released after the 1992 season, has been working out regularly at Camden Yards this winter in the hope of continuing his pitching career.

Although Toronto was a late arrival last night, the Thunder made certain it was an early exit for the Rock.Blindsiding Toronto with an 8-2 run, the Thunder built an eight-goal lead early in the third quarter and coasted to a 21-10 win over the Rock before 5,738 at the Baltimore Arena.Toronto, making its National Lacrosse League debut, never seemed to be in sync after arriving only an hour before game time because of fog at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.Gary Gait registered another one-man assault with a personal-best 10 goals and four assists.

LANDOVER -- In his first 23 days in the NHL, goalie Jim Carey was given the majority of the credit for the Washington Capitals' rapid rise in the Eastern Conference standings.Before yesterday's meeting with the Hartford Whalers, he had lost just once in 12 games and the Caps were looking to extend their 9-1-2 hot streak.So when the Caps lost, 4-3, in overtime to the Hartford Whalers at USAir Arena, Carey was front and center, trying to shoulder the blame."The puck went over my stick," Carey said of Geoff Sanderson's game-winner from the top of the left circle with 2:44 left in overtime.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- It turned out to be an entertaining night for Hartford's hometown fans, and though the game between the Whalers and the visiting Washington Capitals ended in a 1-1 overtime tie, both teams had reasons to be happy.Before the game, the streets were jumping outside the Hartford Civic Center. Kids were dancing as they crossed the street on their way to the game. Fans were standing on street corners trying to buy tickets: "Forty bucks. I have 40 bucks. Anyone got a ticket? One ticket?"

Alabama's Sanderson to resign, report saysAlabama basketball coach Wimp Sanderson has decided to resign and will make it official next week, a newspaper reported yesterday, making him eligible for an annual pension of $75,000.Sanderson, 54, who was accused of striking his longtime secretary, Nancy Watts, in March, will announce his resignation Monday after a three-decade-long tenure in which he became the school's all-time winningest coach, The Birmingham News said.Pro basketballLouisiana State center Shaquille O'Neal wants to play for one of the Los Angeles teams, and because neither is in the NBA draft lottery, he is considering threatening to sit out the season to force a trade, the Los Angeles Times reported.
