Kind strangers already have helped Joe Sanderson keep his job. Now they're helping him go to Disney World. The 20-year-old Millersville resident has overcome physical and mental disabilities to become a paid employee at the Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center. After an article last year in The Sun detailed how budget cuts would eliminate his position, donations poured in from people who were inspired by his good spirits and ingenuity. Now, after learning that Sanderson loves roller coasters, officials at Premier Rides Inc., a Millersville-based theme park designer and manufacturing company, have organized a weeklong trip to Orlando, Fla., with free passes to Disney and Universal Studios theme parks.

Little eyes watched intently as Joseph Sanderson began measuring the amount of trash the third-grade class had left from its last lunch at Arlington ECHO Outdoor Education Center's cafeteria. Although he can't move his malformed hands, he lifted a small trash bucket with his arms and placed it on a small scale. He checked the scale and quietly announced the results. Minutes later, a smile lighted up his thin face as the class yelled, "Thank you" in unison. "He's really very good," said Stephen G. Barry, the center's coordinator of outdoor and environmental education as he watched Sanderson wheel away the metal cart holding the scale and the trash.

A year ago, Joe Sanderson inspired an outpouring of charity. The disabled teenager was about to lose a part-time job that made him feel useful and accepted, working among schoolchildren at an Anne Arundel County nature-education center. Then strangers donated nearly $25,000 to maintain his job at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center after reading about his plight in The Sun in August. Today, the Old Mill High School student who was disfigured by a genetic disorder and abandoned by his parents at age 6 has taken on the role of benefactor.
