"I was seized with fierce palpitations of the heart," a visitor to an Italian cathedral wrote in 1817. "The wellspring of life dried up within me, and I walked in constant fear of falling to the ground. Absorbed in the contemplation of such sublime beauty, I reached the point where one encounters celestial sensations. " That overwrought tourist in Florence was French novelist and biographer Marie-Henri Beyle. Like some pop stars today, he was better known by a single name: Stendhal.

After two quarters of its game against Loyola yesterday, Mount St. Joseph looked like the No. 1 team that has bullied nearly every opponent it has faced this season. The Gaels went into halftime with a 14-point cushion. After the third quarter, they looked like a team that could be upset, with their 14-point lead shrinking to one. But not every game can be pretty, and Mount St. Joseph was happy to escape with a 62-54 victory at Blakefield. "We played very well in the first half, and to [the Dons']

I tried taking Saint-John's-wort some time ago to relieve anxiety. After several months I found I had become sensitive to sunlight. Not only was it difficult to look at things in bright light, but I became uncomfortable in direct sunshine. Since I live in Southern California, that didn't work. I eventually gave up on Saint-John's-wort and learned to avoid caffeine, which a doctor told me is linked to anxiety disorders. Please let your readers know about this side effect of Saint-John's-wort.

MEXICO CITY - Pope John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint of the Americas yesterday during a ceremony laced with emotional tributes to the Western Hemisphere's indigenous roots. Cheering and weeping, hundreds of thousands of Mexicans lined every inch of the 25-mile route the aged pontiff took in his "popemobile" between the Vatican residence here and the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The pope, appearing alert but extremely weak, has long expressed affection for overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Mexico.

Hockey games continue to be just too long for the struggling Baltimore Bandits. If 30-minute halves ever come into vogue as rumored, the team might flourish.Playing their 13th game last night, the Bandits kept intact their perfect record of not having "won" a third period, as the Saint John Flames sprinted past them for a 4-2 victory at the Baltimore Arena.Out to a two-goal lead after a period, telltale signs of a fade began to show up after mid-game as the visitors evened the match in the last nine minutes of the second period.
