Stephanie Allen scored twice to lead UMBC past host Sacred Heart, 9-5, in a Northeast Conference game yesterday. With UMBC leading 4-3 at the half, Allen and Lauren Traber each scored a goal to push the Retrievers' lead to 6-3. Christina Macchia scored to bring the Pioneers (3-7, 0-3) to two, but the Retrievers (4-4, 2-0) answered with goals from Shannon Gallup and Beth Milani to go on top 8-4. Quinnipiac 10, Mount St. Mary's 4: The Braves (7-3, 1-2) scored the first five goals of the game in handing the visiting Mountaineers (6-6, 2-1)

TRENTON, N.J. - Say this for the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team in Vanessa Blair's three years as coach: The Mountaineers try to keep it interesting when it comes to the postseason. In each of the past two seasons, the Mount had succumbed to upsets in the Northeast Conference tournament. As the top seed yesterday, the 15-13 team went to the brink once again before beating Sacred Heart, 50-45, to move into today's 5 p.m. final against Long Island. At the end, Sacred Heart (15-14)

Sister Janet Seubott, a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy who had been principal for nearly two decades of the Shrine of the Sacred Heart Parochial School in Mount Washington, died of cancer Sunday at The Villa, her order's retirement home in the Woodbrook section of Baltimore County. She was 70. Janet Margaret Seubott was born in Baltimore and raised in West Baltimore, where she had been a member of St. Bernardine Roman Catholic Church. After graduating from Mount St. Agnes High School in 1956, she entered the Religious Sisters of Mercy and professed her vows in 1959.

The UMBC men's basketball team won for the seventh time in nine games, defeating Sacred Heart, 67-52, yesterday in a Northeast Conference game at the Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn. Sophomore Will McClurkin led a balanced Retrievers' offensive attack with a game-high 16 points. Sophomore Peter Mulligan scored 15 and classmate Ron Yates added 12 for UMBC (12-7, 8-4 NEC). The Retrievers never trailed, establishing a 33-19 halftime lead. The Pioneers (5-14, 4-8), who lost their fifth straight game, pulled within 38-33 on a three-pointer by Chris Assel with 10:58 to play, but the Retrievers countered with eight straight points.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- After the St. John's women's basketball team's victory over California in the first round of the NCAA tournament yesterday, Red Storm fans began chanting, "We want Maryland!" The Terps gave the St. John's crowd what it was looking for as No. 3 Maryland routed undersized Sacred Heart, 95-54, before 3,990 at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State. Sophomore forward Jade Perry's 20 points spearheaded an attack featuring five players with double-digit point totals. Junior guard Shay Doron scored 17 points, sophomore forward Laura Harper had 16 points and 13 rebounds and sophomores Crystal Langhorne and Ashleigh Newman scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Sister Gabriel Kerrigan, a member of Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart who made friends wherever she went, died of congestive heart failure Saturday at her order's retirement home in the Pinehurst section of Baltimore County. She was 98. Born Mary Catherine Kerrigan in County Galway, Ireland, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1928 and joined the Roman Catholic religious order in 1937. She received the name Gabriel - and never lost her Irish accent. She began working at the old Mission Helpers' Industrial School at Biddle and McCulloh streets in 1938.
