The Marriotts Ridge boys soccer team traveled to Centennial on Thursday with the Howard County championship in the balance. With both teams priding themselves on organized play in the back, it was apparent that a special play would be needed to make the difference. In the 26th minute, Marriotts Ridge senior midfielder Amir Najib softly chipped a ball ahead to junior forward Jeff Kammerer, who settled and then neatly placed a shot from 15 yards in the lower left corner for the game's only score.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - -Ryan Miller made 35 saves for his 16th career shutout, Nathan Gerbe scored his first NHL goal, and the Buffalo Sabres halted Washington's six-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory over the league-leading Capitals on Wednesday night. Miller, who has the NHL's lowest goals-against average, helped the Sabres slow down the high-powered Washington offense that came in with a league-high 108 goals. He preserved his fourth shutout of the season when he robbed Brendan Morrison, who was staring at a wide-open net, with a diving glove save along the ice with 13 minutes left.

Two junior pitchers with contrasting styles, left-hander Alex Bechta and right-hander Austin Harclerode, led top-ranked Centennial to its 17th consecutive win yesterday, 4-1, at No. 15 River Hill. Bechta started for the Eagles (17-0 overall, 13-0 Howard County) and pitched two outs into the sixth inning for his sixth win using a lot of off-speed stuff. Harclerode came on throwing fastballs to get the last four outs, three via strikeout, for his first save. The duo stranded nine Hawks over the last four innings with the only run coming in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch by Bechta with two outs.

Crosby, whose silence the past two games had led an entire nation to brood, took a pass from Jarome Iginla and rifled a shot through the legs of U.S. goaltender Ryan Miller 7 minutes, 40 seconds into overtime, giving Canada a 3-2 victory in the last event of perhaps the last Olympic tournament that will include NHL players.
