WASHINGTON -- There were glasses of fine wines, plump Massachusetts oysters dotted with California caviar and plenty of rollicking stories. It was too much of everything and that, of course, made it a fitting tribute for R.W. "Johnny" Apple, who for the past four decades wrote with legendary gusto about politics and food for The New York Times. Yesterday, bright lights from politics, journalism and cuisine filled the 1,100-seat Eisenhower Theater in Washington's John F. Kennedy Center to celebrate the colorful life of the correspondent, who died in October at age 71. After a string of speeches recounting Apple's antics, the crowd was treated to lunch prepared by chefs of Washington-area restaurants.

COMPUTER BUYERS shopping for themselves or their graduates this years have plenty to be happy about: Prices are still shrinking, and performance is still increasing. Last week, we talked about processors and internal memory, the two most important items on the PC sticker. Today we'll look at options that determine whether the PC you buy is the digital equivalent of a Toyota Corolla or a Dodge Viper. Hard-drive storage: Often confused with internal memory, the hard drive is where your computer stores programs and data permanently.

Thanks to the slow-poke way standards for DVD drives were adopted and some still-evident confusion, most home computers still don't include a credible, easy-to-use DVD burner. Sony, cognizant of this, has come up with a really good line of internal and external DVD burners that will create both plus and minus format discs. The external DRX-530UL drive ($250)will write a DVD+ or -R disc rated for 8X-speed burning in less than 11 minutes. It burns the DVD+RWs at 4X speed and DVD-RWs at 2X. Although an internal drive keeps desktop clutter to a minimum, I like the external DVD writer because I can move it between my desktop computers and laptop, none of which have DVD burners.

But coming in June to living rooms near you: a DVD recorder that just may trigger the end of the VCR. Sony Corp.
