TORONTO - Kevin Gausman's first moments as a big league pitcher mixed a combination of rare talent with a slice of naivete needed to remind you he's just 22 and less than a year removed from being a sophomore in college. In the first inning of his major league debut Thursday night at the Rogers Centre, Gausman baffled veteran Blue Jays hitters on back-to-back at-bats, striking out Edwin Encarnacion looking on a 97-mph inside fastball and then Adam Lind swinging on an 85-mph changeup.

Joanna Conti will make her bid to become the next county executive for Anne Arundel County official on June 13. Conti, a Democrat, announced on Thursday that she'll kick off her campaign with a $25-per-person fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus in Edgewater. Conti is the first Democrat to formally express interest in the 2014 county executive race. She also ran in 2010, finishing second behind Republican John R. Leopold. Mike Shay of the Green Party finished third. Since losing that race, Conti has served on the Citizen Advisory Committee for the county school system and founded a nonprofit organization called Anne Arundel cares.

Dominic Lamolinara's journey from Arnold to Philadelphia - the site of this weekend's Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field - has gone a circuitous route, graduating from St. Mary's to spending one year at Maryland to transferring to Syracuse to emerging as the Orange's starting goalkeeper. The path has been long and meandering, but the wait has been worth it for Lamolinara, who is part of a Syracuse program that is back in the NCAA tournament semifinals for the first time since 2009.

Of the four teams left in the NCAA tournament semifinals, it is top-seeded Syracuse - the architect of a Division I-best 10 national championships - that is bringing up the rear in the offense department. The Orange are averaging 11.7 goals this season, which ranks 13th in the country - a still healthy number that many other programs would love to boast. But unlike previous Syracuse incarnations that dared opponents to keep up with them as they galloped up and down the field like a pack of unbridled thoroughbreds, this year's current squad is viewed as a more patient outfit, a group that prides itself on locking down opponents on defense and exhibiting patience on offense.

Remember the last time you got a B in a class? Maybe a B was OK, a hard-earned accomplishment in a difficult, GPA-sinking course. Or perhaps a B just wasn't good enough - a subpar finish that left you mentally shaking a fist at other classmates. The grades are in for the Johns Hopkins University. Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM), an international student-run health advocacy group, recently released the first-ever University Global Health Impact Report Card. The report card ranked the top 54 North American research universities on their overall contributions to global health.

Here's what umpire crew chief Gerry Davis told me about the delay on today's replay review on Rays right fielder Matt Joyce's eventual home run ball in the Orioles' 3-1 loss to the Rays: "[Orioles manager] Buck [Showalter] wanted to know whether the ball was, in fact, fair. We got together as a crew to discuss whether the ball was fair or foul, whether any of us had anything differently than [first-base ump Dan Iassogna] had. We did not. So the ruling on the field was that it was a fair ball in play.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of my public career was an excellent relationship with public safety unions. Law enforcement, fire and EMT groups were supportive of my races for the state legislature, Congress and governor. Although not unheard of, such consistent support made for some uneasy moments when national labor organizations (almost exclusively associated with Democratic candidates) were informed about public safety union support for "that Republican Ehrlich. " From a personal perspective, it was easy to separate the unique nature of public safety's job description (public protection being the No. 1 job of government)

Broadneck's Ellen McNulty had seven goals and an assist and Aislinn Probst scored four goals and added two assists to lead the No. 12 Bruins (17-3) to a 15-5 win over No. 15 Catonsville (16-3) in the Class 4A-3A state semifinals at Franklin on Saturday afternoon. Probst scored 10 seconds after winning the opening draw, and the Bruins had nine of the first 10 goals in the game on the way to a 10-3 lead at halftime. "We just were trying to stay patient and play our game and score early so we didn't have to fight back at the end," McNulty said.
