The first call came into emergency dispatchers at 10:17 a.m. Ten more followed in rapid succession as witnesses spotted the smoke billowing from the 100-year-old wooden house. Within minutes, the first emergency worker was on the scene. Timothy Rumbaugh, a Harford County sheriff's deputy, found neighbors outside the house who said they had heard screams coming from inside. He began a frenzied, ultimately futile, rescue effort. "There was no way that anyone that was on that second floor could be alive," said Rumbaugh, who managed to pull one man out from just inside the back door, only to learn later that he died at the hospital.

The Falcons host rival Westminster in a key early-season Carroll County football matchup that is expected to mark the school's first stadium sellout. Winters Mill pre-sold about 2,000 tickets to students and fans from both schools, and because of safety concerns, chose not to sell any more at the gate. "We just don't have the facility to have 3,000 or 4,000 people in the stadium," athletic director Bill Rumbaugh said.

Coach of the YearBill Rumbaugh, North Carroll: When Rumbaugh took over the struggling Panther program in 1993, he told his staff that four years would be an accurate timetable to gauge how much progress has been made. Rumbaugh saw the first glimpses of success on last year's 5-3 JV team, which moved into the varsity ranks this fall. "A winning attitude is an important thing, and it's changing in our program," Rumbaugh said.
