Lightning might have been the cause of a two-alarm fire early yesterday evening that seriously damaged several units of a Sykesville condominium and forced the residents from their homes. No injuries were reported. Deputy Chief Eddie Ruch of the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department said the first alarm at the Piney Run Town Houses in the 1000 block of Stonebrook Road was reported at 6:28 p.m. and the second at 6:43 p.m. Ruch said firefighters from stations in Carroll, Howard and Baltimore counties responded.

Liberty basketball coach Scott Kohr went on and on about starting forward Eddie Ruch until he finally came up with the best way to describe him."Eddie's the kind of kid who loves to take a charge," Kohr said. The senior is always up for a good battle. On the football field this past fall, the lanky 6-foot-4, 165-pound defensive end constantly beat bigger offensive linemen, getting to the quarterback seven times for sacks and earning first-team All-County honors. "I'm small compared to those tackles, but I'm faster, so I just had to beat them to the spot," he said.

The Liberty football team has made a living off its potent passing attack this season. Last night, the defense chipped in as the Lions returned two fumbles for scores en route to a 35-33 thriller against visiting Thomas Johnson in Eldersburg. The win helped Liberty improve to 3-1 in the Central Maryland Conference and 6-1 overall, and kept the school a game behind conference leader Urbana, which owns the tiebreaker courtesy of a 38-7 thumping of the Lions two weeks ago. Senior quarterback Tony Scirica and senior tight end Robbie Ruch connected for two of Liberty's five touchdowns last night, but the key to the win was the two returns.
